About this deal

A consistent grind is the first step to a brilliant cup of coffee. This is a fact that Wilfa knows well! Yet again, they’ve produced an unrivalled coffee grinder, this time with the help of world-renowned barista Tim Wendelboe.

They also grind right down to 250 microns (down from Gen 1's 550 microns and up), which means you can dial in your finest pourover recipes for even more extraction. The use is incredibly simple: There is just an on/off button, but with the automatic shut-off you rarely have to press it more than once. The simplicity of the design also contributes to its longevity. With minimal electronics and no display screen or added features, there is very little to go wrong.

Is the Ode Gen 2 Worth It?

Yet for as much fussing as we would have had to do to make espresso, pour-over, which Reyna refers to as “the second hardest kind of coffee to make” was one and done. Wilfa recommends grinding it between steps 14 and 28. Sam ground on step 24 to use with a Kalita Wave dripper, and the coffee came out perfect, measuring 20.36 percent extraction (they like between 18 to 22 percent), and with total dissolved solids (TDS) of 1.40 percent. For French press peeps like yours truly, the grind was plenty coarse, and when I made some at home it was deeply flavored and not too sludgy. Easy peasy. We give people a weight of beans and say ‘adjust your grind,’” explained Sam. "You can't do that with this machine." That’s a substantial amount of cash for a home user, so it’s difficult to say whether the extra money is worth it to you. European versions of this grinder come either with a normal lid, or a built in scale that doubles as the lid of the grinder. On paper, an included, incorporated, and removable scale seems a great idea. That said, almost every online review of the scale-equipped Wilfa Uniform was very negative on the scale as a whole. We’ll get a bit more into that down below.

We've said it for years – a good grinder is second only to your choice of beans when it comes to making exceptional coffee. Although the specialty coffee scene is relatively young, certain brands are considered established leaders in the field, and Fellow is one of them. To test this, I prepared three cupping bowls with the Lido 3, Helor 101 and the Uniform. I enlisted the help of my girlfriend who cupped the bowls blind. The Niche Zero is an espresso-primary grinder with a relatively small single dose hopper. It has a simple on/off switch for operation, and a wide range of grind settings. From the get-go it was designed as a zero retention grinder and primarily for espresso use, but it is quite capable of grinding for siphon, V60, and Chemex. Of course! In fact, the Fellow Ode Gen 2 is ideal for a whole range of filter methods - from the finest pour-overs to coarse French Press and cupping. In total, it boasts 31 steps to choose from, so you can really focus on dilling in each new coffee. Plus, it's quiet. The Ode Gen 2 was designed with quietness in mind, so your brewing ritual can be properly peaceful. While you could put a fair amount of beans in the Uniform’s hopper, it's designed to be a “single-dose” grinder, meaning you weigh out just the beans for the coffee you're about to make, then grind. This is what I've been doing at home for years, a short step that's completely worth it. More exciting, you can pour the beans in, press start, and walk away, because (to borrow a word usage from a favorite cookbook)—fanfare!—it has an auto-off function.Made for someone who wants to weigh for accuracy - there’s no built in grind timer, so if you’re happy to weigh each dose then there’s no problem.
