Mike has done the amazing job of reverse engineering 8 (so far) VW/Seat/Skoda radios and has found various hidden commands and discovered ways to retrieve the Safe code from most of them via the K-Line and some open-source hardware/software that he created. He's made all the info available for free. The only downside is that his software runs on a custom circuit board and that's a barrier to most people. Before anyone ventures in doing output tests, it is recommended that the repair manual is read and thoroughly understood so that you know what to expect.
A car owner/mechanic can use the VCDS system for virtually all the functions that the dealer diagnostic tools can perform. Switch ON ignition with any key new or old, no mater which one. Start software, select VDO NEW – CAN bus from menu. Press Connect Selected ECU button, after 5 seconds the data of the dash will be shown on screen. Press Program New Key, software will read data from the dash and after few seconds a new window will be open. See the picture. ID numbers of the transponders which are stored into memory will be show. In short, if you have a Volkswagen or an Audi there you no longer the need to guess what is wrong with the car or doing modifications by trial and error.It then codes them into 4 character codes which are simple to understand and each one is related to the performance of the vehicle.

If you try and do output tests on the Airbag you could get a warning saying that the car might not start and asking if you would like to proceed.
