About this deal

First the good stuff. When it comes to standard dynamic range (SDR), this TV is capable of delivering a very punchy image. Colours are suitably natural and, as a result, images look pleasingly realistic. There’s also plenty of brightness, and a solid contrast performance.

Information about the average amount of time, in which the pixels change from one color to another. The panel sits on a centrally mounted T-shaped stand, styled in dark silver to match the strip along the bottom of the screen. The support column at the rear has a V-shape that gives the impression the screen is floating in mid-air. This clouding issue with HDR sources is much less likely to appear with SDR content; in fact, its good native contrast makes it a rather good SDR display. Many countries receive market-specific variations of television, of course, due to differences in broadcast standards and so on – so at present there’s no confirmation of what the equivalent Samsung screen will be in other territories. What we can be certain of, though, is that both the United States and Australia will be getting a range of competitively priced, competitively specified Samsung 4K LED TVs that are more than a little reminiscent of the BU8500 series. Arguably the most surprising thing about the BU8500 given Samsung’s usual strengths in this area, is that motion doesn’t look quite as cleanly handled as it is on TCL’s 55C735K.The ratio between the horizontal and the vertical side of the display. Some of the standard and widely used aspect ratios are 4:3, 5:4, 16:9 and 16:10. Most are side-facing – which helps with routing cables – but an HDMI port and digital optical out are rear-facing, so if you want to connect a third source, you may need one of those right-angled HDMI connectors. Information about the maximum amount of time, in which the pixels change from one color to another.

This is a 4K LED screen, powered by Samsung’s ‘Crystal 4K’ processor and with support for HLG and HDR10+ standards of HDR (we’re used to Samsung refusing to offer support for Dolby Vision, but it never stops being galling). The operating temperature shows the safe temperature range (from minimum to maximum), within which the display will function flawlessly. Outside this range it might operate improperly and/or fail entirely. There’s support for High Dynamic Range, specifically HDR10, Hybrid Log-Gamma (HLG), and HDR10+. Samsung is a big proponent of HDR10+, but it doesn’t support Dolby Vision, which is the other HDR format with dynamic metadata. Its screen bezel is a bit ‘budget special’, too, with its slightly chunky width and a brushed finish that’s probably supposed to conjure up thoughts of brushed metal but really just looks like what it is: plastic with thin horizontal lines in it. There’s no Q in the UE55BU8500’s name, confirming there are no Quantum Dots in its screen. Colours are made more conventionally via a filter system – though as noted earlier, Samsung does claim a billion-wide range of colour tones from this set’s Dynamic Crystal Colour and Crystal Processor 4K combination. There’s no local dimming system, but a Contrast Enhancer system is provided to analyse every frame of incoming images to try and optimise how the screen handles contrast with different types of content.Information of the number of pixels in a unit of length. With the decrease of the display size and the increase of its resolution, the pixel density increases.
