The latest in Peter and Mark’s series of half a dozen books on the history of Wanstead Flats, and tells the story of cattle grazing locally, and the colourful characters involved. That article also looked at the earlier Woodgrange farm and the original Forest Gate. The 1863 Ordnance Survey map published 1873 (see below) shows the narrow and wide Chestnut Avenue, more or less on the current alignment, but with no housing development.

This is the third in an occasional series of articl es by local historian, Peter Williams, who specialises in Newham housing, maps and local history.
