About this deal

Although Hairy Maclary and his five companions were all different shapes and sizes, and all very different dogs with very different lives, they all responded the same way when they saw the cat. Add to the description of your favourite character. How could you describe Schnitzel von Krumm with a very low tum? The Hairy Maclary stories are published all over the world. They have been adapted for the stage and one was read by the New Zealand Prime Minister on television on Christmas day 2019.

Bitzer Maloney is the only other member of Hairy Maclary‘s gang that, like Hairy Maclary, is of mixed-breed parentage. With his large bright eyes, long legs, finely boned thin frame and snaky tail, he is definitely part greyhound. On your second and third readings of the story you can point out the rhyming words as you come across them e.g. “Listen. “yowl” sounds like “howl”. They rhyme. The end of the words sound the same”. This article possibly contains original research. Please improve it by verifying the claims made and adding inline citations. Miklavčič, Alja, Jana Kolarič (in Slovenian), Društvo slovenskih pisateljev , retrieved 16 August 2017 My wife and I both like dogs - which probably helps us enjoy this one! We don't have a dog at the moment (we have three cats) but we're currently planning to get a puppy for Fin's 5th birthday. If anyone's interested, we're hoping to get a Toller retriever. They're cute, huh? Visit the playground at school and take photographs to show your understanding of the words -down, past, end, straight, out.If you haven’t discovered the wonders of Hairy Maclary and his equally hairy mates, why not add these to you Summer Reading Adventure lists and enjoy some good ole Kiwi reading fun: Sculpture of Hairy Maclary and other characters from the books in Tauranga, New Zealand on the waterfront It has sold more than 11 million copies worldwide and been translated into Mandarin, Korean, Japanese, Swedish, Russian, Slovene [8] [9] - and te reo Māori. [10] It has also been adapted into a stage play, which has been performed at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and the Sydney Opera House. [11] Hairy Maclary books are designed to be read by an adult to a child. The plots are simple, keeping with the comprehension-level of the age group for which they are written. They generally involve Hairy and his friends in adventurous scenarios pitched against local cats. The animals in this series, unlike the creatures of Beatrix Potter's stories, are not given human thoughts and motives, their actions tell the stories, and reflect their animal natures.

Hairy Maclary goes for a walk in town and meets a few of his friends along the way. They all have a wonderful time exploring the streets until they suddenly encounter Scarface Claw, the toughest cat in the city, causing all the dogs to run for home. It was my son's first birthday last week and the boy got so many presents we're struggling to find space for them in our little house! I have a little boy and love reading to him, so this reading list will cover the classic (and new) children’s stories we’re enjoying together. Although the Hairy Maclary series are peppered with loads of New Zealand references such as the word “dairy” (this would be called a “corner shop” in Scottish lingo), and illustrations with cabbage trees, Pōhutukawa, ponga trees and flax, the name “Maclary” is a decidedly Scottish-sounding name! What’s in a name? Hairy Maclary is off for a walk, and he's joined by furry friends of all shapes and sizes, from Bottomley Potts (covered in spots) to Schnitzel von Krumm (with a very low tum). In recognition of the success of these books, a sculpture of Hairy Maclary and other characters from the books was officially unveiled on the waterfront in Tauranga in 2015, the city where Lynley Dodd lives.

When your child is consistently able to recognise the rhyming words in the story you can then encourage him or her to come up with their own words. You can say “Can you think of another word that rhymes with Potts and spots?”. Questions for Philosophical Discussion » Summary This story presents various questions regarding the philosophy of human nature, specifically the philosophy of emotion and feelings. You just can't go wrong with anything written by Lynley Dodd. Truly, the humour, the joy, the rhythm, rhyme and pattern all help to make the dogs heading for Donaldson's Dairy memorable, engaging and hugely entertaining. Following the resounding success of my Locus Quest, I faced a dilemma: which reading list to follow it up with? Variety is the spice of life, so I’ve decided to diversify and pursue six different lists simultaneously. This book falls into my BEDTIME STORIES list. Hairy Maclary leads all the other dogs in the neighbourhood to investigate the terrible caterwauling created when the tough cat Scarface Claw is caught up in a tree.” (Catalogue)Search for the numbers in the story. Make the numbers using the materials to show their value. What is something the same about the numbers? What can you use to calculate the total of all the numbers? Hairy Maclary from Donaldson’s Dairy is a fabulous book full of rhyme, repetition and rhythm – and funny animals! The book tells the story of scruffy dog Hairy Maclary meeting up with different dog friends who are all out for a walk. The dogs are all fantastically described, being all different shapes and sizes and are given fun, imaginative names. Each dog is happy to be outside, sniffing the air and snooping at every door, when suddenly they encounter Scarface Claw, the toughest Tom in town. This causes all of the dogs to run home in a scatter, a wail and a howl. The other thing about reading these books many many times is the mind starts to get a bit 'beautiful' about it. I've started to make inferences about the owners of each pup involved in this story based on the dog and the brief snippet of front gate we get for each introduction. Worse I've started asking more questions, why are there so few people in this town? Why is Ms Plum always the hero, is she the local busybody, or town hero, maybe she's the only non-pet owner in town? I think this poem invites musical accompaniment, it could be performed by dividing the class into groups of children responsible for being 'Bottomley Potts' or 'Bitzer Maloney' etc.
