About this deal

Take time to read the early years foundation stage ( EYFS) framework and Development Matters and discuss your setting’s approach with colleagues. take part in simple pretend play, for example, they might use an object like a brush to pretend to brush their hair, or ‘drink’ from a pretend cup It's mandatory for all early years providers in England, maintained schools, non-maintained schools, independent schools (including free schools and academies), all providers on the Early Years Register, and all providers registered with an early years childminder agency (CMA). These attributes will provide a secure platform from which children can achieve at school and in later life. Without securing these critical skills outlined in this initial Prime Area of Learning in the EYFS, children will find it difficult to progress in the subsequent areas of development. Forming positive relationships and attachments, and being able to manage your own emotions are the foundations needed to ensure active, enthusiastic and secure learners that can develop and thrive.

Provide enough materials and arrange spaces so that children can collaborate and learn alongside peers. Give children enough time and space to engage in large-scale projects that may continue over several days. Each child’s level of development is assessed using teacher judgment and their knowledge of that individual child against the early learning goals. Teachers are responsible for deciding whether the child is meeting expected levels of development, or if a child is not yet reaching expected levels (known as ‘emerging’). Practitioners know that starting school, and all the other transitions in the early years, are big steps for small children. 3. The curriculum: what we want children to learn Practitioners understand that toddlers are learning to be independent, so they will sometimes get frustrated. Offer children many different experiences and opportunities to play freely and to explore and investigate. Make time and space for children to become deeply involved in imaginative play, indoors and outside.

A choice of CoEL or CoETL banner. The 'Characteristics of Effective Learning' title was updated in the 2020 Development Matters to the 'Characteristics of Effective Teaching and Learning' but you can choose whether to make a CoETL or a CoEL display.

Children’s personal, social and emotional development (PSED) is crucial for children to lead healthy and happy lives. It's a fundamental aspect of their cognitive development. Physical activity is vital in children’s all-round development, enabling them to pursue happy, healthy and active lives. The posters clearly present the new Early Learning Goals for EYFS that are statutory from September 2021. More Areas of Learning resources to advise and inform you: Explore the reasons behind children’s choices, for example, ‘I’m interested that you’re using a paintbrush rather than a pencil to make your picture.’ Involve children in making decisions about science experiments: what might we feed the plants to make them grow? Why do you think fizzy water might work? How will we know if one is growing faster than another?’. Active learning
