About this deal

Well, Deadly Intent is a little different to the rest. But you can bet that the author is already typing away at a new adventure. With the investigation gaining momentum, it was coming to light that the original team had been incompetent – the level and depth of research, testing and foot-work just wasn’t there. To Anna’s dismay, it seemed there were more questions than answers. Determined to discover the truth, feeling that Jessie was wrong in her sureness of the guilty person, Anna felt exceedingly frustrated. Anna Travis is seemingly incapable of learning a lesson. She is asked no less than 412 times to not go off doing her own secret investigations on the case, but she still does it a 413th time. In the vast majority of instances, there was really no reason not to tell the rest of her team. Lynda La Plante’s novels were turned into a TV show in 2009. The TV show was called Above Suspicion, after her first novel. The TV show is based on the books, which are about DC Anna Travis. Series One

These are two best books in Anna Travis series by Lynda La Plante, Above Suspicion and The Red Dahlia. Anna Travis does her usual thing in this novel, going off on dangerous tangents alone. Yes, yes, we know she will get into trouble, jeopardise the investigation etc etc, but it all turns out okay in the end, doesn't it? That said, I enjoyed the characters and the systematic unraveling of the mystery, which is less about who-done-it and more about how-to-prove-it.

LYNDA LA PLANTE AWARDS

I feel this book is most likely the end of the series. Hope I'm wrong, but that's the impression I have. Langton retires and Anna has a new love interest ... a member of the FBI at Quantico. The main character was so annoying and inept at her job. Really, you're going on an international trip for work and you're not going to ask about arrangements? You're just going to hire a random taxi driver and tell him you're investigating a murder? I feel like she spent more time being insecure about her appearance and creepily caressing her dad's picture every night before bed than she did actually working the case... Stylistically, this is different from many of the books I usually enjoy. The writing is pretty basic. Heavy on dialogue. A little detached and distant. Her first TV series as a scriptwriter was the six part robbery series Widows, in 1983, in which the widows of four armed robbers carry out a heist planned by their deceased husbands. Each book (this one is # 9) follows cases, some cold, some not. Anna has to prove herself to the team and she does so brilliantly. She sees things that others do not ... she's like a professional problem solver.

Another major distraction is that whilst in the earlier books there is a lot of concentration on the relationship between Travis and Langton, it's rise and ultimate fall fitted into the storylines well, not distracting from the main aim of the books which was always to solve a baffling crime. Unfortunately in this book - with the definite end of the relationship the constant soul-searching of Travis just gets in the way - there were way too many times when the reader was told all about how conflicted she is having to work with Langton, how she still loves Langton, how a new relationship will be complicated by the pain she felt when Langton left her. And she does form a new relationship in this book - and it is a bit of a highlight in the storyline for a short while. The books then go on to follow Anna Travis’s career in the police. In the second book, she is now a Detective Inspector and she is still working with her partner, James Langton. Above Suspicion Above Suspicion is a British crime drama based on the series of Anna Travis novels written by Lynda La Plante. The series stars Kelly Reilly and Ciarán Hinds as the protagonists Anna Travis and James Langton. Four series were broadcast over a total of four years on ITV. The first episode was broadcast on 4 January 2009, and the final episode on 28 January 2012. The first three series all aired on consecutive nights; whereas the fourth series a more traditional weekly format.

Her success in scriptwriting did not become apparent until 1983, when she wrote the TV show, Widows, for Thames Television. The plot of that show was that four armed robbers lost their lives and then their widows took over and started to do the robberies that their late husbands had planned. Moving to Books? After leaving school, Lynda La Plante briefly worked as a trainee at a fashion house before moving to London to pursue an acting career. She landed a role in a touring production of the musical Cabaret and later worked as a nightclub hostess to make ends meet. In the early 1970s, she turned to writing, penning episodes of popular British television shows like Z-Cars and The Sweeney. Lynda has received a huge amount of awards over her time in the field, including becoming an honorary-member of both the Liverpool John Moores University and British Film Institute. She was also awarded with the Dennis-Potter Writers-Award from the British-Academy of Film and Television Arts, and she received the Edgar-Allan Poe Writer’s Award (not to mention an Emmy) for her mini-series Prime Suspect. But, when he finally gets what he’s yearned for all these years, a political scandal erupts around him and he is shunned into the shadows once again with no shred of a positive reputation left. Sir William Benedict is left with no choice but to exact revenge on those who have sabotaged his dreams…and Justin Chalmers and his sister Laura are about to discover just how dark revenge can be when exacted by a man who has nothing left. What Kind of Awards has La Plante Earned?
