About this deal

PLENTIFUL: One can of paint covers up to 50 square feet (or 20 linear feet), which is very impressive, especially when you consider that the quality of this paint doesn’t dip either. As you go down this road, you are bound to make mistakes. Let’s highlight some avoidable errors for a successful project: A kitchen renovation is a huge project. It’s expensive. It goes on for months. It leaves us with nothing to eat except pizza and microwavable meals. So putting it off until you are absolutely sure you know what you want is so wise. We don’t know what we want yet and we’re definitely not ready to dole out the money for it. So we made a few temporary changes last year in our Weekend Makeover, and now I’m finally sharing our Rustoleum countertop transformation paint review. Emma Phelps, an Updates Writer for The Spruce, revised this article to reflect the latest products available for DIY countertop refinishing. To better understand application methods, Phelps conducted extensive research on popular kit brands, necessary tools, dry time, and coverage possibilities.

We created this video FOUR years after we initially painted our countertops, so you can see exactly how well they stood up as we share all of the scratches and reactions. How many of you out there have been looking for a paint product that will cover your countertops, leaving behind nothing but a sleek, impressive shine? We know we have. If you are applying one of the countertop transformation paint kitsthat has decorative chips in it, you will have to mix that first before applying the base coat.If you are applying decorative paint chips, you will have to do this while the paint is still wet.Our kit did not have chips in it, so read your instructions thoroughly if you are completing this step. When I finished painting and sealing our countertops, I loved them right away. They were shiny and clean and so much more beautiful than the horrible laminate we had before. When shopping, don’t go for cheap. Alternatively, shop where professionals get their paint. Such shops provide vast selections of paints and primers. Also, the staff is well conversant with paint and can offer guidance. SURFACE RECOMMENDATION: Spray painting chalk paints is easy and the paint can adhere on metal, glass, wood, ceramic, and canvas surfaces. Some countertop refinishing kits, especially certain paint formulas emit volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that have a strong smell and can be harmful to inhale—when they are heavily concentrated indoors. Look for kits that tout low or no VOCs, and always wear a mask when applying a substance that may contain chemicals. As an added step, make sure to open a window or two for proper ventilation in the process.

The idea of the stone spray paint is to mimic the real natural stone appearance and texture. Shake the can before and as you spray to ensure the stone-like granules are evenly distributed on the countertop. Also, you add a top clear coat that retains the stone texture underneath and doesn’t change the paint color as well. Chalked spray paint Preparation: Surface prepping is the most tasking bit yet the most essential. Preparation involves cleaning, sanding, and priming. Good prepping yields great results. Not shaking the spray can. The paint’s consistency gets uneven if you don’t rattle the spray can before and during the job. Especially when using stone textured spray paint, some parts get more stone grains than others. The process is fairly straightforward, but I’ll lay it all out for you here. Make sure you still read all of the directions that come in your countertop paint kit before you start though! STEP 1: Repair & Clean Countertops It is important to understand that not all countertops can be spray painted. The best options for spray painting are porous surfaces like wood, Formica, concrete or ceramic. Countertops like natural stone or quartz are notorious for binding with paint. Spray painting is much simpler if the surfaces can be sanded and buffed. Consult an expert on whether you can paint your countertops.Research creates awareness of what you are getting yourself into. Find out if the type of material on your countertop can be spray painted. Decide what look you want to mimic. Options to choose from include marble, high-end stone, or even a textured surface. The biggest issue I have had is some slight yellowing of my countertops, most noticeably in the corner beside our range.
