About this deal

Kitty treats allow you to bypass an occasional consequence. You can use them to reroll a die, avoid owies (damage points), activate bonus features from your magical powers, or alter the story (if the GM agrees). Second, we wanted the game to only use six-sided dice. I’m a big fan of the polyhedrons, but limiting the dice to just one type would (a) allow us to provide dice in the boxed set for a relatively low cost (so we could invest more in other features) and (b) provide a more familiar experience to players in our core target audience six to twelve year-olds. When it comes to sitting down to actually play Magical Kitties Save The Day, my kids had a great time just making their Kitties. They also loved looking over the River City map and catching small details like the fact that there’s a game store in the Town Square. As a result, during character generation you roll two six-sided dice and read them like percentile dice, generating thirty-six results from 11 to 66, to determine your Magical Power. The table gives you more room to write a single-digit number for your player’s kitty’s attributes than it does to write in information about each kitty’s Human and those Human’s Problems.

Roll a dice pool to do something difficult. Each die that rolls at or above the gamemaster’s difficulty is a success. The number of successes you roll determines the outcome and drives the story forward in unexpected and exciting ways. While having the deluxe wooden tokens and dice with cat paws on them would have been nice, there’s nothing actually wrong with the components in this box. Another cool thing about the game which is not touched on in these cheat sheets are the tools we developed for prepping adventures. If you like the adventure design advice and scenario structures I talk about here on the Alexandrian, I think you’ll find this stuff right up your alley: The core structure is that, in addition to their humans having Problems, the hometowns where kitties live also have Problems. Take a hometown Problem and aim it at the human Problem. As the hometown Problem — things like dinosaurs and hyper-intelligent raccoons and fairy feuds — complicates the kitty’s human Problem, you’ll generate the seed for your adventure. Every Magical Kitty has a human. Every human has a Problem. In Magical Kitties Save the Day, you need to use your magical powers to solve problems and save the day. But kitties live in Hometowns that are filled with witches, aliens, hyper-intelligent raccoons, and other foes. They make human problems worse, so the kitties need to go on adventures to stop them before that can happen.

In Magical Kitties Save the Day, one player — known as the Game Master (GM) — has a very special role. They describe the world in which the magical kitties live to the other players and, when the kitties take action, they use the rules of the game to figure out what happens next. Playing Magical Kitties is easy. You have 3 Attributes – Cute, Cunning, and Fierce. You also have a Talent, a Flaw, and a Magical Power. When your kitty is trying to do something difficult, you’ll build a pool of six-sided dice with: For example, in our last game session, we were exploring M cats humans problem, that his human was worried that he was not going to be a good big brother for his new baby sister. We had finally reached the point where the baby was brought home and I had set up something where the hyperintelligent racoons had put up a device where those affected ignored living things below a certain size, proportional to their own. So, while the boy could hear the baby screaming, the parents could not, and just thought the boy was acting weird. P's solution was to find a knife in the kitchen and try and slit the baby's throat. I don't think that is within the spirit of the game. I shouldn't have to use NPC's to keep him from committing atrocities. When we ended the session for the evening, he was planning to look for nuclear weapons, and given that his cat's magical power is detect, that seems like it should work better than I would like. You are CUTE. You are CUNNING. You are FIERCE. You are magical kitties, and it’s time to save the day!

There is some great GM advice here, with a lot of modern RPG sensibilities, such as when to roll and how to set difficulties, dealing with players just being silly and trying actions that obviously won’t work, describing what happens, making mistakes and dealing with them, a TV show based story structure and more. Magical Kitties Power Up! also includes new rules for any series, including thirty-six brand new powers plus new bonus features for the powers you already love. Here are the rules for kitties who can control shadows, create magical art, or eat anything. This new second edition of Magical Kitties Save the Day was also designed by Matthew J. Hanson but this time with help from Justin Alexander and Michelle Nephew. It features artwork from Anthony Cournoyer, Kat Baumann, Ekaterina Kazartseva and Jason Thompson.

Some of you might be balking at this: The core audience is six to twelve year-olds and you want them to understand how to read non-standard percentile dice? I’ll probably talk more about those features at a future date. For today, I’d like to take a peek at the Magical Powers in Magical Kitties. Here we learn how to be a Magical Kitty, which sets the tone and expectations for all the players. This includes a number of rules like, “You must keep your magic hidden from humans. You want to help your human. You can understand humans but they can’t understand you.”, and the fact that you have a special spot in your home the humans don’t know about that will let you come and go without being noticed. In Magical Kitties Save the Day, it’s not just a question of whether or not you succeed: It’s about how you succeed. The complications and bonuses generated by most outcomes drive the action forward in unexpected and exciting ways. You and your friends will discover the story together! The final sections of the books give you details of foes and disasters that you can slot into these adventure recipes.

There is a pretty extensive description of how to deal with problems and how you should create each episode by choosing a hometown problem and aiming that at one of your players Kitty’s human’s problems. There’s also talk about creating alliances with your problems, when problems are no longer problems and more. The whole system reminds me of Fronts from PbtA games.Super Bonuses, which work the same way, include things like, you and all the other kitties get a bonus die, your entire Kitty Krew can shrug off an Owie, you or another Kitty can shrug off an Injury, one foe takes an extra Owie, etc.

In this hometown, magical kitties don’t have to hide their powers while they’re helping to solve Princess Problems. Second, a Magical Power should have an active use: Part of the fun of the game is for players to think up creative and crazy ways that they can use their powers. Players shouldn’t have to passively wait for the GM to cue them. In addition to references to other parts of the River City book, the adventure also has a number of references to the main rulebook. In some cases, these references make a chain where the adventure will tell you to look up a Foe in the River City book and when you do that the Foe has you look up a Foe entry from the core rulebook.
