Preparing Wood for Staining Gray washing wood can be done in two ways — first, using paint and water; second, paint and wax. Since paint and water is the more convenient and most used way, we’ll discuss this one only.

We recommend leaving the stain to soak into the wood for one or two minutes before wiping the excess off. This will prevent the stain from staining the wood too dark; you can then apply a second application of Wood Stain if you want to darken the wood further.

Lastly, Varathane's Weathered Gray turned out quite nice after a second coat was applied. It's perfect for that rustic look, or for wood with a nice grain that you want to show off! This one is quite different than the grey shade and instead looks more baby blue. That’s why it’s the least selected choice in grey wood stains. However, it can be preferred by those looking for less of the wood species underneath, unlike other stain options in this category. A woodworking friend of mine shared this video by Ralph Chapman with me that helped him set up his workshop. The darkest of all grey colors, carbon grey, is one of the best choices you can have when looking for grey wood stain colors.
