About this deal

The list includes cheap supermarket brands as well as high-end products and my aim is to make this product list as comprehensive as possible. Conditioners – Curly Girl Method UK Products Don’t use heat to dry, style, curl, straighten and even wash your hair. Heat is one of the greatest sources of damage to hair and the dreaded frizz problem. Hair follicles age. You won’t have the same quality of hair in your 50s, 60s and 70s+ as in your teens, 20s or 30s,” says Anabel. “Texture changes, as does the way it behaves. Many grapple with unmanageability, a different wave or curl pattern and products that used to work, no longer have the same impact. Curly or coiled textures are the most fragile, therefore more susceptible to breakage.

I expect Lorraine Massey never intended her helpful method to be taken to the extremes that it has! Yes, gentler handling and care of naturally curly and textured hair is something we certainly support, but remember this was written more than 20 years ago – we’ve come a long way since,” says Claire Shread, co-founder of Umberto Giannini. Note: Some people with ultra-fine or wavy-curly hair get better results with mousse, but the vast majority of CGM-ers do well with gel) Either plop your hair for 5-15 minutes, or gently cup and scrunch the excess water from your hair with a cotton T-shirt or microfiber towel. Air-dry (don’t touch!) or diffuse your hair on low. Once your hair is 100 percent dry, gently scrunch your hair with your hands to get rid of the crunchy gel coating. THE END

What is the “Curly Girl” Method?

As hard as it might be to wrap your head around all this, you can’t deny that, in pretty much every aspect of life, the natural approach is always the best – so why not your hair?

Scrunching allows you to squish products and moisture into your hair at every step of the process, encouraging clumps (aka defined curls) and healthy hydration. And if you do it upside down, you get the added benefit of volume on finer hair types. Hop under the shower, wet your hair and use gentle, circular scrubbing motions to stimulate your scalp and work in the conditioner – or your product of preference – using only your fingertips (no nails!). The recommended intervals for hair cleansing are: once a week for wavy hair (always conditioning before and after using no-poo shampoo); once a week/every ten days for curly hair (co-washing with water or conditioner); wet your hair in between co-wash days and condition if you have coily hair. So, what else still holds true from the original handbook? Well, there’s reducing heat styling and opting to air dry, plus ‘plopping’ works (a technique using a cotton T-shirt or pillowcase to ‘plop’ sopping wet hair into a mound, avoiding damage caused by twisting up traditional towels) as does ‘scrunching out the crunch’ (applying gel to soaking wet hair, leaving to dry, then scrunching out the hardened product), which is ASMR-bliss, plus a super-fun way to experiment with spirals. With the CG Method you only need two products: conditioner & gel. If you want to use shampoo, Massey recommends only using a gentle, sulfate-free cleanser. Waxes and mineral oils (just like silicones, most waxes and mineral oils can build up on your hair and can only be removed with heavy-duty sulfates to remove) I have no experience with starting ‘fresh’ but if your hair is very short, I don’t think there’s much else you can do but take care of it the way you are. I really admire you for even committing to the CGM after what you have been through so I would recommend you take it slow and just use the products which you feel are doing you good. I don’t know if you are using styling products such as gel or mousse, but perhaps mousse would help settle your hair a bit whilst growing. Anyways, ever since then, the texture of my hair changed. It was never curly but certainly a bit wavy. But I straightened it for the next 20 years because, well, I just assumed it was supposed to be straight.

A third tip (which I am sometimes now very good at following), is to use cold water when you condition. I hate this bit because I love a hot shower but I have to admit that my curls always come out much better with cold water. What: A lso called “co-washes” or “no-poo” and are essentially rinse-out conditioners used as shampoo. Many curl types (and all coil types) don’t do well with drying detergents—they only need water, moisture, and a thorough scalp massage (like, you should be massaging your co-wash into your roots for at least 60 seconds) to get clean. The Curly Girl Method, from Lorraine Massey’s book “ Curly Girl: The Handbook,” is a hair care method that trades in damaging habits (like shampooing and heat styling) for a healthy curly hair regimen using just conditioner and gel. While this set of recommendations has been shown to have incredible results for many curlies in our community, you should always feel free to modify them to suit your hair! The dos and don’ts of the Curly Girl Method I then apply Curlsmith Defining Styling Soufflé through mid to ends, then top using praying hands method. My hair is sopping so I do the scrunch method. According to Joleigh Wynter, the curl specialist behind London salon Curl Talk who was also trained by Massey, CGM is simply about looking after your curls in the kindest, gentlest way possible.

As you can see, the curl community is a literal community—it kinda takes a village to figure out hair textures, and these are just a few of the zillion resources available out there. After two sessions of cleansing, this step surely feels good. Grab your favorite hair conditioner and load it up. You want your hair to feel completely saturated during this step. Personally, I like my hair to feel slippery. Then I know I’ve applied enough conditioner to not only nourish my curls, but to help with detangling, too. The Curly Girl Handbook advises against any brushing at all, suggesting you should use your fingers to brush through your curls while wet with conditioner, so as not to damage your curl pattern. But Joleigh recognises this is not always possible for every hair type. Of course, there's nothing wrong with frizz if that's what you like, but according to Joleigh, frizz should always be a choice.

When switching over to natural hair care, knowing how porous your hair is will make it easier for you to find the best product for your hair. There are different ways to test whether you have high or low porosity hair.Grab a strand of hair and slide your fingers towards your scalp; smooth rides indicate low porosity hair and clumsy slides are a sign of high porosity. How it Works This step involves the use of a clarifying shampoo to remove buildup from the hair strands and give your hair (and scalp) a deep clean,” Williams says. “In this case, sulfates are okay to use because they are formulated to remove and cut through heavy oils and products that may leave build up on the hair.” And if you’re a product junkie, this step is especially important for you: It’s basically stripping your hair of any impurities and gunk that your previous styling method may have created. You won't do this step every time — just the first time you start. 2. Cleanse Before starting the Curly Girl Method, you need to strip your hair of all silicone and wax buildup, or you'll never (ever) get CGM to work for you. Seriously. So the very first shower you take to begin your CGM journey will require a “reset shampoo,” i.e., a sulfate-based clarifying shampoo to give you a clean foundation (I used Suave’s Ocean Breeze Shampoo, FYI). After that? No more sulfates ( unless you accidentally use a product filled with unapproved silicones or waxes; then you’ll need to “reset” again with your clarifying shampoo). Regular cleanser My issues are that my waves are just sort of flat, not really defined, there’s not much volume and it’s incredibly frizzy. I also tend to get an oily scalp the day after washing. If you’re not sure who the Curly Girl Method is best for, or if it work for your hair, I will say that type-3 curls tend to see the best results from CGM (again, make sure you know your hair type; it’ll make the jargon you read so much easier), though tons of people with 2c and 4a hair have also had amazing success. So it doesn’t mean you can’t experiment if you have straighter or coilier hair, but just know your mileage may vary.
