About this deal

Carcass: The fabric body of the tyre made from overlapping nylon threads encased in rubber. A more supple carcass enables the tyre to deform around lumps for extra grip but is less stable at low pressures. A reinforced carcass is more protective and less wobbly at low pressures but heavier and less comfortable. Lighter carcasses are more likely to get punctures too Puncture Force Sharp Needle: Pre-2021, this score was known as 'Puncture Resistance'. On some tires with weakly bonded casing wires, the sharp needle can split the casing wires resulting in a lower score. The only tyre brand to use Graphene in its construction, Vittoria’s 4C blend uses the ‘wonder’ material in the softer outer layers that coat respectively firmer (rolling-speed enhancing) central lugs and (grip-enhancing) softer corner lugs. Sidewall: The bare side of the tyre, between the tyre tread and rim bread. Double or ‘two ply’ on DH tyres for extra stability and pinch flat resistance; airtight on UST tyres for tubeless running

Puncture Force Blunt Needle: The Blunt needle has a flat tip and won't split the casing wires. To puncture the tire, the blunt needle has to cut the casing wires. Narrower tyres, on the other hand, offer less cushioning and have less ‘footprint’ to grip with. Pinch flat resistance is lower on narrower tyres, too, unless they are being ran at higher pressures, which in turn could negatively affect grip. Cross-country tyres are likely to be at the narrower end of the scale, while trail/enduro tyres tend to be a little wider. Tyres in this range offer good protection and grip for more aggressive riding. All the technical wizardry in the graphene-infused tread compound along with the tread pattern design translates to a very aggressive XC tyre that suits demanding and technical courses.Compound: Exclusively developed by Vittoria and achieves high-end performance. The 4C is a layering process using 4 separate rubber compounds within the same tread. The 4C construction provides unmatchable versatility in both the central and side tread areas. The finished product is extensively tested to ensure it meets the competition level performance that road and off-road cyclists demand, and benefits the rider significantly, providing better rolling efficiency, better grip and puncture protection. There’s only one size, but 29×2.4in is exactly the size you’d want for a tyre such as this. It blows up quite round compared to rival mountain bike tyres, so the fact you roll along on a thinner strip of the crown ensures the pointier tread doesn’t hamper rolling speed. On soft surfaces (loose sand, grass, etc), almost all grip will be created by the knobs digging into the surface, and our test results will be of little use. TPI: The number of threads per inch in the carcass. Tyres with more threads are generally higher quality with a more subtle feel, but companies such as Tioga use a smaller quantity of fatter threads The rounded crown also makes it easier to tip the tyre from side to side when manoeuvring the bike around.

The Syerra feels pretty robust for an 850g tyre. You can really lean it over and slam the bike round corners without the sides bending excessively or burping sealant as some downcountry tyres do. For more about our grip test, and how the knobby tread pattern affects the test results, we have more information here. There’s a massive range of tyre widths available from 1.5in to 5in fat bike tyres. The majority of mountain bikers run tyres in the 2.2in to 2.5in range, and more recently up to 2.6in has become commonplace. NOTE: As of 2021, we've improved the puncture resistance tests and now provide 'Total Puncture Score' as the main puncture resistance indicator. The evenly spread, siped tread does a sterling job in keeping you upright and allowing you to push harder through corners. Grip levels are predictable so there are never any trust issues with the front end, and the tread pattern also makes for a great companion at the rear. Multi-compound: Tyres that use different rubber compounds; dual compounds are normally harder in the centre or underneath for fast rolling and long life, but soft on the shoulders for cornering grip. Schwalbe and Maxxis now do triple-compound tyres too The Syerra is a bit slower than some on very smooth fireroads and tarmac. However, off-road on lumpier ground, it’s hard to differentiate it from faster-rolling tyres. Typically for Vittoria, wear life is excellent.
