About this deal

Loveless (with Marcelo Frusin (#1–5, 9–10), Danijel Žeželj (#6–8, 13–15, 22–24) and Werther Dell'Edera, 2005–2008) collected as: The project was initially announced as an ongoing series set in the main DC continuity with an October 2019 launch date. [41] Superman/Batman: Public Enemies: Lex Luthor | Major Force | Metallo | Amanda Waller | Toyman | Solomon Grundy | Gorilla Grodd | Killer Frost | Lady Shiva | Giganta | Mongul | Captain Cold Azzarello cites Jim Thompson and David Goodis among his influences. [29] [30] Personal life [ edit ] Azzarello in 2011 Bermejo: Still probably a bit too early to talk about the next project in any kind of detail, but I can say that I'm working on another graphic novel for DC and it features prominently some of the main characters. I can also safely say that it is a much different project content-wise than Joker. I wrote this graphic novel so it will be my first foray into stewarding a project completely myself. So far it's been a challenging but extremely exciting endeavor!

Phillips, Dan (October 23, 2008). "The Joker's Wild Ride". IGN. Archived from the original on May 30, 2014 . Retrieved August 25, 2013. In Batman: Damned, a 2019 sequel to the graphic novel Joker, Joker and Batman are found to have been fatally injured during the clash on the bridge, plunging into the water below. However, when Batman dies of blood loss, Joker re-emerges from under the bridge, laughing manically (in a scene that mentions the genesis of the character in The Killing Joke).

Success!

Make no mistake: Azzarello’s Joker is one earth-shattering force of chaos. He has the unique ability to see all those little “strings” attached to us and our feeble realities, that is, he fully understands the degree to which our lives are determined by social rules and bonds and structures. And he has come to the conclusion that those strings must be cut. After all, who in his right mind would voluntarily transform himself into a mere puppet by becoming a productive member of society? As far as the Joker is concerned, he’d much rather toy with all those little puppets out there, and Lee Bermejo’s detailed artwork ensures that such alternative forms of entertainment look appropriately nasty and disturbing. It takes me about two years to do these projects, more or less. It was the same for the Luthor project, and that mini-series really took it out of me. Brian has talked plenty about how we had no interest in working together and it was pretty true. We had both decided to move on do other things, but the discussion we had about the Joker really intrigued me. I already had an idea of how I wanted to interpret the character, even while Brian and I were still working on Lex. In fact, if you look closely at the newspaper Lex is reading in issue #3, there is a photo of my Joker there! When the timing and opportunity to finally do it came up, it just seemed like the logical choice.

Interview With Writer Brian Azzarello - The 100 Bullets author sits down with Dan Phillips to talk about developing this project. Bermejo: I see it as a big danger to make everything homogenous no matter what situation. I think that comics can do things movies can't and vice versa. In my opinion, you only expose their weaknesses if you try too hard at making one exactly like the other. Joker may have some cinematic elements, but we certainly never set out to do a "film-esque" comic. It very much plays (I hope) to the strength of the comic medium, which is that it tries to control the way you read it and the speed at which you read and react to certain scenes with a combination of text and art. I've seen a lot of artists attempt to do 'widescreen storytelling', some of them with great results, but ultimately they're still just carefully controlling what you see and how you read it. It may be considered more cinematic but it's still just using the comic book formula to a particular end. I’m not a huge grim-and-gritty kind of guy when it comes to comics. I can enjoy and respect a well-told tale regardless of what angle it takes, but when I read a Joker story, I want it to be wild and over the top and so outlandish that it could only happen in a comic—not suburban New Jersey. Azzarello and Bermejo had previously worked on a similar take on Superman's archenemy in Lex Luthor: Man of Steel, and Joker grew out of a discussion following completion of that project. DC Editor Dan DiDio approved the new project the following day. [2] The initial plan was to reflect this connection with a title sharing the same structure, Joker: The Dark Knight but was felt to be too similar to the film The Dark Knight, and so the name was shortened. [2] When the writer was asked if he preferred writing villains he said: "I relate to them. [Laughs] I don't relate to the heroes. The Man, tryin' to keep you down!"
