When a bluebottle has been dead for more than 10 minutes it tastes impossibly bitter. Barely alive or just deceased, it has a cheese flavour. Stilton, mostly. The author, Scholastique Mukasonga, starts at the beginning of her life as is the case with memoirs. This was in the late 1950s and she was born (1956) in the southwest of Rwanda, in Gikongoro province, at the edge of Nyungwe forest. Her family are Tutsis. Anti-Tutsi violence began in 1959 and they are deported to Nyamata, in the district called Bugesera. The displaced people here would go home once the troubles were over. It was supposed to be only temporary. I had no idea this had started that long ago. My knowledge is only around the 1994 genocide. I had a lot to learn it seems. Herranz N, Gil J. Mechanisms and functions of cellular senescence. J Clin Investig. 2018; 128:1238–1246. doi: 10.1172/JCI95148. [ PMC free article] [ PubMed] [ CrossRef] [ Google Scholar] For instance, one of these mechanisms is the accumulation of cells that have undergone cellular senescence in body tissues (Collado et al. 2007) which refers to a permanent but stable arrest in the cell cycle due to the action of stressors which result in the limitation of cellular replication or cell proliferation (Ben-Porath and Weinberg 2005; Herranz and Gil 2018). Therefore, cellular senescence refers to the decline or deterioration of organisms as they age which may also be due to the build-up of physiological or oxidative damage causing what are commonly known as age-associated diseases (de Verges and Nehring 2016; Herranz and Gil 2018; Hseih and Hsu 2011; Lucas and Keller 2014). I remember when going to hunt there was places I was told to never approach not for fear of mines but because it contained Mass Graves where the former or last Somalian Government used to kill my tribe in a collective way, i remember always finding bones there when floods come and makes some bones resurface.

What I resent,” Simon said, “about these privately educated types is their sense of entitlement. Excluding you, of course.”All of her friends, too, lived in a state of permanent denial of the bad smells from sewers, infested slums, unheated apartments, single mothers on welfare, worn-out clothing. No, everything had to be perfect, every morsel of food had to be well served — presentation, always presentation, the ultimate mask."

Ben-Porath I, Weinberg RA (2005) The signals and pathways activating cellular senescence. Cellular senescence in honey bee brain is largely independent of chronological age. Exp Gerontol. 2006; 41:1117–1125. doi: 10.1016/j.exger.2006.08.004. [ PMC free article] [ PubMed] [ CrossRef] [ Google Scholar] The majority of this book is presented as a spare, precise sequence of events following the author’s childhood and education. I was actually reminded here of Annie Ernaux’s “The Years”, but Mukasonga’s writing is by no means derivative of hers. While the author doesn’t present herself as intelligent or gifted, she unexpectedly passes the tests required to get her into an elite school in Rwanda, and she excels in education as she moves into social work. This ultimately is what saves her life, and forces her to account for the 37 members of her family who would not survive. The second half of this book finds her returning to her past, no longer with fear of being branded as an ethnic minority. In this space, she goes to name those that died and whose bodies will never be found. Publishers Weekly stated that it is a "powerful and poignant book [that] plants itself in that terrible absence, its stone etched with a difficult, necessary grief." [1] Belkaid Y, Hand TW.
