About this deal

A 100-400mm lens lets you push a little further than the standard professional focal length of 70-200mm, and also offers more flexibility than a 500mm prime. They tend to be more affordable than these types of lenses, too, though with an understandable trade-off in terms of raw sharpness. A 100-400mm is more for versatility than getting the absolute sharpest picture possible, so bear that in mind going in. Falloff and the Digital Lens Optimizer are ON by default. You can turn them off in your camera's menu system.

Notice the f/8 to f/11 focus shift rearward slightly in the 300mm and especially the 400mm results? Samples taken from the outer extreme of the image circle, full-frame corners, can be counted on to show a lens's weakest performance. The additional ring is the knurled Control Ring, able to be configured for fast access to settings including aperture, ISO, and exposure compensation. There are also a set of in-camera aberration corrections available with current and recent Canon and Nikon bodies, curbing peripheral illumination, distortion and lateral chromatic aberration. The matte-finished ribbed focus ring is nicely sized and ideally positioned in front of the zoom ring. When you need/want to leave the tripod behind, IS will be there for you, helping to ensure sharp images and adding significant versatility to this lens. The RF 100-500 is sharper (better contrast and resolution) wide open than the RF 100-400 gets at any aperture. It is often easy to create attractive, compressed-perspective landscape images when using a telephoto lens. A full set of switches is on hand for AF/MF focusing, an autofocus range limiter and dual-mode optical stabilization for static and panning shots. Buttons around the forward end of the lens enable a autofocus-hold function. The zoom ring has variable friction damping, applied via a separate ‘zoom torque adjustment ring’. This 100-400mm on the RF 2× extender becomes a 200-800mm f/11-16 on the converter, which now is a little slower but can zoom both wider and longer than just 600mm.

A Telephoto Zoom for the Everyday Photographer

Like most companies, Canon announced the huge, expensive RF 100-500mm L IS first, so that all the rich people who wanted to buy one would, and so that all the people who wanted a long zoom for their EOS-R series camera bought it if they could afford it. Above: Next here’s the view at 200mm, where the maximum aperture has dimmed by two thirds of a stop to f7.1. Most modern lenses have correction profiles available (including in-camera), and distortion can easily be removed using these. The lens's switch must be in the "MF" position and the camera meter must be on/awake for conventional manual focusing to be available. An even better option for increasing the magnification of this lens is to mount extenders (also referred to as teleconverters) behind it.

transmitted here into linear (rather than rotational) movement within the lens. This tiny new Ultrasonic motor achieves the combination of fast, near-instant response during still image shooting, Well, this Mark II version is extensively redesigned from its predecessor, ditching the questionable trombone-style push-pull zoom mechanism in favour of a more conventional twist ring. More importantly though, the optical design has been updated for greater sharpness, which is impressive throughout the zoom range. In our lab tests we found a little drop-off towards the outer end of the zoom, but it was still very impressive. APS-C format cameras using lenses projecting a full-frame-sized image circle avoid most vignetting problems.Fluorine coatings are commonly used on the front and rear lens elements to avoid adhesion of dust and liquids and to make cleaning easier. Astigmatism is seen as points of light spreading into a line, either sagittal (radiating from the center of the image) or meridional (tangential, perpendicular to sagittal). We test lenses using both real world sample images and lab tests. Our lab tests are carried out scientifically in controlled conditions using the Imatest testing suite, which consists of custom charts and analysis software that measures resolution in line widths/picture height, a measurement widely used in lens and camera testing. We find the combination of lab and real-word testing works best, as each reveals different qualities and characteristics. The RF 100-400 has less geometric distortion in the wider shared focal lengths, and the EF 70-300 has a slight advantage at the long end.

Autofocus in this version and the Nikon F-mount version is rapid and practically silent, while the image quality is competitive with the own-brand versions. What tips it over into the Canon camp though is the fact that the rotational direction of the zoom ring is the same as it is in own-brand lenses, meaning it slots into an existing collection more naturally. So strong are these advantages that even professionals may want to have this lens option available in their kit. The longer the focal length, the larger subject details (captured at the same distance) are rendered, and the more still the camera must be held to avoid subject details crossing imaging sensor pixels, the cause of motion blur. The RF 1.4x adds a slight amount of barrel distortion that offsets some of the lens's native pincushion distortion. This focal length range will be attractive to wildlife and sports photographers, though the narrow max aperture range will be hindering to that group.CANON COMPLETES ANOTHER CHAPTER IN THE RF LENS STORY – INTRODUCES TWO NEW BUDGET-FRIENDLY LENSES FOR EOS R FULL-FRAME MIRRORLESS USERS The only reason to turn these off is if for some reason the camera is having to work to hard to process all the images as you shot; I've never had a problem. EOS R cameras need a menu setting changed for manual-focus override, otherwise the focus ring is always ignored in AF. While Canon's own software may be able to correct this from RAW CR3 files, be warned that other brands of raw processing software probably won't correct the distortion.
