Santa Montefiore's boeken zijn degene die mij na jaren van niet te lezen, terug aan het lezen hebben gekregen. De romantische insteek, op vaak mooie locaties zorgden steeds voor een warm gevoel in mijn hart. Jammer genoeg beleefde ik niet hetzelfde gevoel bij Wacht op mij.This book really explored the idea of reincarnation and the esoteric. It was quite challenging in some parts, but done quite gently so that no one would feel like they couldn't carry on reading if it clashed with their belief system. I liked the story but a lot of the beliefs content was not really my cup of tea. 3.5 rounded up to 4. The writing is passionate and moving. The characters are hopeful, hesitant, and endearing. And the plot is an engaging, touching, heartfelt tale about life, loss, friendship, family, hope, heartbreak, tragedy, destiny, fate, war, and love, all interwoven with a thread of the supernatural.

This is the first time reading a Santa Montefiore book, I thoroughly enjoyed. Makes you think about things in a different light.. Als Max met zijn verloofde Elizabeth over zijn steeds terugkerende droom wil praten neemt ze hem weer niet serieus, integendeel ze lacht het weg, negeert het vervolgens gewoon en hierdoor voelt hij zich steeds meer onbegrepen. Hij voelt zich al een tijdje niet meer comfortabel in hun relatie en ook in zijn job dat werd geregeld door zijn toekomstige schoonvader voelt hij zich gevangen. Hij begint hoe langer hoe meer te beseffen dat Elizabeth niet de juiste vrouw voor hem is. Er zijn naderende trouwplannen na een lange verloving en hij krijgt het wat benauwd maar uiteindelijk neemt hij duidelijk een standpunt in en stapt hij niet in het huwelijksbootje – gelukkig maar. As ever in books by this author the characters were well rounded and of course the descriptions of Cornwall were lovely- Santa Montefiore obviously knows the area well.

Dit boek is erg meeslepend geschreven, geen enkele keer verveelde het. Hoewel de meeslepende schrijfstijl van Santa Montefiore bekend is bij haar lezers, komt dit in dit boek nog meer naar bovendrijven. Nogmaals het zou zo gebeurd kunnen zijn. A promise that he will return to her. Das hübsche Cover hat zwar nur einen indirekten inhaltlichen Bezug, gefällt mir allerdings gut. Der deutsche Titel ist etwas irreführend, da es nicht nur um Marigolds Töchter, sondern auch um sie selbst geht. In diesem Fall ist das englischsprachige Original („Here and Now“) treffender. Santa Montefiore has signed a four-book deal with Orion Fiction, with the first in the new series, Shadows in the Moonlight, to be published in July 2024.Het idee van de reïncarnatie laat Max echter niet los en hij gaat er zich uiteindelijk in verdiepen - op zoek naar antwoorden. Hij komt de juiste personen tegen die hem allerlei boodschappen geven en hem sturen en met behulp van zijn familie stuit hij tenslotte op de familiestamboom langs vaderszijde. Als hij uiteindelijk alle puzzelstukken samenlegt komt hij bij Rupert Dash die gesneuveld is tijdens de Slag van Arnhem ten tijde van de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Hij wilt er alles over weten en hierdoor maken we een vlucht naar de geschiedenis - de oorlog met Hitlers leger als onze vijand. Hij reist zelfs naar Nederland om dezelfde streek te bewandelen waar destijds ook Rupert heeft gewandeld in de hoop iets van zijn vorig leven te voelen. Eenmaal hij Ruperts graf heeft gevonden treft hem een bijzonder moment dat de rest van zijn leven zal bepalen.

I found this an enjoyable and compelling read and I was keen to find out how the 3 timelines came together. The ending was pleasant but not particularly unexpected. I would describe this as a moving romantic novel with a slightly unusual twist. Nu o să vă ascund că am plâns pe durata ultimelor pagini. Nu m-am putut abține. Am plâns pentru Marigold: de ușurare și de tristețe. Am plâns pentru că este extrem de frumos să știi că ai atâția oameni pentru care ai însemnat ceva. De personages zijn ronduit egoïstisch en inhoudsloos en ik ergerde me mateloos. Het boek is ook helemaal niet realistisch. Het ligt er vingerdik op dat Marigold aan dementie lijdt en haar gevoelens en gedachten worden aan de lopende band ontkracht met de irritante zin : “We worden allemaal nu eenmaal een dagje ouder.” Zelfs het verdict van de dokter brengt deze zin aan het licht terwijl Marigold vertelde dat ze op een gegeven moment niet meer wist waar ze was en dat ze gevallen was. I mean? Zelfs haar man kent haar blijkbaar niet goed genoeg om te weten hoe abnormaal dit wel niet is. As the family learns to manage this upheaval, Marigold finds herself becoming more forgetful. Initially chalking it up to old age, it soon becomes harder for those who know her to ignore the signs that something else might be behind her forgetfulness.
