About this deal

Johnnie Walker have released a one-off whisky blend in a distinctive, futuristic-shaped bottle in honour of the highly anticipated Blade Runner 2049 film. The new whisky, we can confirm, will appear in the new Sci-Fi movie. Whiskybase B.V. is the Dutch private limited liability company, having its statutory seat in Rotterdam, The Netherlands and its office at Zwaanshals 530, 3035 KS Rotterdam, The Netherlands. Whiskybase B.V. is registered with the Dutch Chamber of Commerce under no. 52072819. Johnnie Walker describe the new blend as having “our trademark smokiness and a contemporary twist… with sweet fruity vanilla flavours and is bottled at 49% ABV for added intensity” and as a nod to the date the film is set, no doubt. The 2049 bottle wasdesigned by creative agency Love (who claim they had been suggesting the brand take advantage of their attachment to Blade Runner for years before the sequel came along) and features in a key scene in the film.

In Joshi’s (Robin Wright) LAPD office in Blade Runner 2049 we find an oh-so-beautiful grey metal E63 Table Lamp (also called the Ruspa Table Lamp) designed by Umberto Riva. Opening globally from October 4, 2017, in 2D and 3D in select cinemas and IMAX, " Blade Runner 2049" is a presentation of Alcon Media Group, in association with Columbia Pictures, a Ridley Scott/Alcon Entertainment/ Bud Yorkin production, in association with Torridon Films and 16:14 Entertainment, a Denis Villeneuve film. It will be distributed domestically by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company, and internationally by Sony Pictures Entertainment. It was John's son Alexander who saw the brilliance in his father's product. He was the one that launched the original Johnnie Walker blend: Old Highland Whisky, with a white label. You will see that even this early incarnation used the iconic square bottle. The iconic square bottle was a cost-saving invention. The new Blade Runner whisky blend and bottle is the result of an official collaboration between Master Blender Jim Beveridge with Blade Runner 2049 Director Denis Villeneuve to reflect the movie’s character. “Like many fans, I remember the Johnnie Walker bottle from the first film, so it was a unique privilege to collaborate with Johnnie Walker on designing a totally original, custom bottle for the new movie. It was also a once-in-a-lifetime experience to help create the limited-edition Director’s Cut blend, which perfectly captures the complex and mysterious world of Blade Runner 2049.” says Denis Villeneuve. Follow Quentin’s blog for ongoing updates. He also has future plans to similarly create the Tyrell Corporation boardroom scene and J.F. Sebastian’s apartment in the Bradbury Building if time allows. We await with baited breath. The bottle's presentation isn't as pretentious as, say, Johnnie Walker Blue Label. The two-piece box reveals the corked Blade Runner with atmospheric, auburn hints at the Sci-Fi epic.

Beveridge said: ‘I learned that film-making is much like blending – you have to constantly be committed to creating the best possible outcome. Having learned of the art of blending tea, John transferred the technique to whisky in an attempt to make a more consistent product from the single malts, which could often fluctuate in quality. A bit stronger than the pedestrian JWB, and you can taste a little more citrus in this one. 49% brings the alcohol level above JWB, as previously mentioned, but the bite is forgivable; you'd expect a bump from 80% to 89% from interesting to torturous. Not so. Diet Coke or sour mix to alleviate the smooth burn is a bad idea. Sipping this, with some almonds and a Cubano means the day ended right. Whatever the century, whatever the universe, the commitment of Johnnie Walker to the spirit of human progress endures. As we toast to the future, the makers of Johnnie Walker remind you to please enjoy your whisky responsibly. The name of the special edition is a reference to the 1992 re-release of the original film, which featured a significant recut by director Ridley Scott.
