About this deal

Nordyke, Kimberly (January 15, 2023). "Critics Choice Awards: Full List of Winners". The Hollywood Reporter. Archived from the original on January 16, 2023 . Retrieved January 16, 2023. But I think, when you do realise how deeply organic it is, that there's something driving these people, that gets to the point where they really cannot control themselves.”

Although Beaumont and the FBI were convinced that Hall was a serial killer, he had been convicted for killing just one victim, Jessica Roach, the girl in the cornfield, and it took two trials to do it. The guilty verdict from the first was overturned on appeal, and now an appeal was pending on the second conviction. A basis for both appeals was that Hall’s confession had been coerced by wily investigators. If the government lost the second appeal, Beaumont would have to try Hall yet again and he might go free. Keene was a former operative for the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) who worked to gather incriminating evidence on suspected serial killer Larry Hall. [7] Approximately seven months into Keene’s sentence, the FBI and U.S. Attorney Beaumont approached him with an arrangement that would allow Keene to regain his freedom and have a fresh start with a clean record. According to a CNN interview, Beaumont stated this about Jimmy Keene, "He's smart. He's articulate. He's not afraid. And I knew he wanted to get out." [8] In Life, People can take a few wrong turns that destroy them. I’m one of those people. But I was given a second chance—not only to save myself but to redeem society for the wrong choices I made. a b "Film and TV Projects Going Into Production – In with the Devil". Variety Insight. Archived from the original on March 26, 2021 . Retrieved March 26, 2021. He looked up expecting to see a scowl from Beaumont. But the prosecutor’s gaze was no longer as hard or even accusing. Keene continued through the file. One photograph was of a second naked victim in a ditch, but other pictures were of smiling, attractive young women. They could have come from high school yearbooks. The file also included terse police reports from Indiana, Michigan, Wisconsin; even states as far away as Utah. Some of the teens had been found dead and, like the girl in the cornfield, with signs of strangulation. Others were still missing. The series was announced in January 2021, with Taron Egerton and Paul Walter Hauser cast to star. [6] [7] Ray Liotta would be added to the cast in March, [8] with Greg Kinnear and Sepideh Moafi joining the next month. [9] The six-episode limited series premiered on July 8, 2022, on Apple TV+. [2] [3] In reality, Keene recalls in his memoir saying, “Hey, you look cool. Do you know where I can find the library?” Hall explained where it was, and then asked: “You think I’m cool?” Keene replied that he did, making Hall laugh. Hall went every day at 2:30, he said, to read the papers, and Keene would make sure to go at the same time. Eventually, Hall invited Keene to breakfast with him and his friends – known by other inmates as the “baby killers”. I did a good deed, and I did a lot of good things," he said in the TV interview. "That's where I feel the redemption comes in. I've done something good for the things that I did wrong."

Falls under the technically, you told a story category, for me. It’s very oddly written in a way, since Keene is a third person perspective but it’s ostensibly his book? Clearly, it is written by the other person with details supplied by Keene, which makes it odd he’s the predominate name, but I guess it’s more upfront than ghostwriting. It’s just a bit odd at the start as you acclimate. Beaumont, Keene remembers, was ecstatic, practically reaching across the table to hug him: “That’s great. Great.” Still stunned, Jimmy stared at the photos of the girls and listened to Beaumont talk about Hall, barely absorbing the details. Finally he blurted out, “What does this have to do with me?” What stood out for me most was the voice – it was very robotic. It did not express a lot of emotions.” Just a few months into his sentence, Keene was approached by the prosecutor who put him behind bars. He had convicted a man named Larry Hall for abducting and killing a fifteen-year-old. Although Hall was suspected of killing nineteen other young women, there was a chance he could still be released on appeal. If Keene could get him to confess to two murders, there would be no doubt about Hall's guilt. In return, Keene would get an unconditional release from prison. But he could also get killed.Hall lost his appeal, and tried to take his life as a result. Now 59 years old, is currently serving his sentence in the Federal Correction Institute Butner, North Carolina – home to terrorists, Mob bosses and Ponzi lynchpin Bernie Madoff. The thematic link between the two becomes explicit. Does Levin believe that the FBI made a similar connection between the men? “For Jimmy to somehow be able to communicate with him,” says Levin, “it has to touch on some of those similar nerves... he has to seem sympathetic with him, before Larry would confess. And that was the button that he could push. Jimmy was still confused. Why did the prosecutor want him to go undercover? “Why don’t you take some FBI guy and send him in?” he asked. Speaking on Dateline in 2012, he said he hopes that his role keeping Hall behind bars has allowed him to earn some line of redemption.
