Description

Both of these ingredients work by forming a film on the skin that acts as a water resistant barrier and helps to prevent evaporation of the skin’s natural moisture, similar to petrolatum.

The famous or maybe rather infamous mineral oil. The clear oily liquid that is the "cheap by-product" of refining crude oil and the one that gets a lot of heat for its poor provenance. It is a very controversial ingredient with pros and cons and plenty of mythsaround it. So let us see them: Tell your doctor right away if you have any serious side effects, including: unusual changes in the skin (such as turning white/soft/soggy from too much wetness), signs of skin infection. While it is true that industrial grade mineral oil contains carcinogenic components (so-calledpolycyclic compounds), these are completely removed from cosmetic and food grade mineral oil and there is no scientific data showing that the pure, cosmetic grade version is carcinogenic. The active ingredient in CeraVe Healing Ointment is 46.5% petrolatum. You may recognize this ingredient because it is the ingredient used in Vaseline (petroleum jelly). For refilled products in the store, the most up to date list of ingredients should be obtained locally after refill of the product on the point of sale).

Our current one, Ceramide 1, or morerecently called CeramideEOP, was the first one that was identified in 1982 and it's a special snowflake. It contains the essential fatty acid, linoleic acid and has a unique structure. It's believed that ceramide 1 plays a "binding role" in the lipid layers of the extracellular matrix. Along with ceramides 4 and 7, they also play a vital role in epidermal integrity and serve as the main storage areas for linoleic acid (a fatty acid that's alsovery important for barrier repair). If you have any of the following health problems, consult your doctor or pharmacist before using this product: skin cuts/infections/sores. CeraVe boasts expert recommended, non-greasy and fragrance-free skincare that respects the skin’s natural barrier. The brand’s skincare range offers products for normal to dry skin types, as well as skincare suitable for eczema and psoriasis-prone skin. The CeraVe formulas contain a unique blend of ingredients, such as: CeraVe is a dermatologist-developed cult skincare brand which hails from the US. The CeraVe story began in 2005 after experts noticed that many skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis and dry skin all had one thing in common: a compromised skin barrier. Inactive Ingredient: MINERAL OIL, PARAFFIN, OZOKERITE, DIMETHICONE, CERAMIDE NP, CERAMIDE AP, CERAMIDE EOP, CARBOMER, WATER, SODIUM LAUROYL LACTYLATE, PROLINE, CHOLESTEROL, PHENOXYETHANOL, TOCOPHERYL ACETATE, TOCOPHEROL, HYDROLYZED HYALURONIC ACID, PANTHENOL, PANTOLACTONE, PHYTOSPHINGOSINE, XANTHAN GUM, ETHYLHEXYLGLYCERIN

Ok, so now we know what ceramides are, let's see what they do in our skin: research shows clearly that they play a super important role in keeping the skin barrier healthy and the skin hydrated. If ceramides in the skin are decreased, more water can evaporate from the skin and there is less water remaining in the skin. So ceramides form kind of a "water-proof" protecting layerand make sure that our skin remains nice and hydrated. While all skin types can benefit from emollients like mineral oil and paraffin, emollients are especially helpful for those who have dry, rough, and/or flaky skin. Emollients can alleviate these symptoms, leaving the skin looking and feeling soft and smooth. What is CeraVe Healing Ointment? Mineral oil is a clear, odorless oil derived from a mineral source, typically a distillate of petroleum.

Customer reviews

It is a great emollient and moisturizer working mainly by occlusivity.Occlusivity is one of the basic mechanisms of how moisturizers work and it means that mineral oilsits on top of the skin and hinders so-called trans-epidermal water loss, i.e water evaporating out of your skin. When compared to heavy-duty plant oil, extra virgin coconut oil, the two of them were equally efficient and safe as moisturizers in treating xerosis, a skin condition connected to very dry skin.

Before using this product, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to any of the ingredients in the product; or if you have any other allergies. This product may contain inactive ingredients, which can cause allergic reactions or other problems. Talk to your pharmacist for more details. Without ceramides, the skin’s barrier is weakened, which can lead to dryness, itchiness, and even signs of aging. Topical application of ceramides can help to replenish ceramide levels, thus restoring the skin’s natural barrier. In addition to petrolatum, the CeraVe Healing Ointment formula includes two additional occlusive emollients: mineral oil and paraffin.Of course, the CeraVe Healing Ointment formula includes ceramides (as do all CeraVe skin care products). Specifically, this formula contains ceramide NP, ceramide AP, and ceramide EOP. But what exactly are ceramides and how can they benefit your skin? Let’s take a closer look at how topical application of ceramides may benefit your skin. Trust us, if something is used for more than 100 years in cosmeticproducts, it hasadvantages. Chemically speaking, cosmetic grade mineral oil is a complex mixture ofhighly refined saturated hydrocarbons with C15-50 chain length. It is not merely a "by-product" but rather a specifically isolated part of petroleum that is very pure and inert. Before having surgery, tell your doctor or dentist about all the products you use (including prescription drugs, nonprescription drugs, and herbal products). Badmouthing mineral oil is a favorite sport of many, it is a cheap material and being connected to petrolatum makes it fairly easy to demonize. Another super common myth surrounding mineral oil is that it is comedogenic. A 2005 study titled"Is mineral oil comedogenic?" examined this very question and guess what happened? The study concluded that" based on the animal and human data reported, along with the AAD recommendation, it would appear reasonable to conclude that mineral oil is noncomedogenic in humans."
