So, perhaps the greater fear is that you won’t have the thrill of seeing a bear while cycling in his habitat. But instead of ignoring the cyclist, the bear charged forward. This still makes me anxious. I did a solo ride from Philly to Rochester, NY and while I carried bear spray, i was still (probably irrationally) nervous about bears. Fortunately I only saw one from a distance and it ran away, but that was enough for me to say nope! not risking night riding. I'd love to understand better what to do about the chase instinct. If, say you don't notice the bear but it notices you (such as night riding), and it starts chasing, should you just stop and yell at it? yell while riding? ride like you're gonna die? maybe assume you don't have anything but your bike to defend yourself.

So hunting them is actually is a very humane thing to do. I wonder if the deer got a vote on this, they might just want to take a chance on starving - I would.
