So, perhaps the greater fear is that you won’t have the thrill of seeing a bear while cycling in his habitat. But instead of ignoring the cyclist, the bear charged forward. Milner crashed into the bear’s shoulder and went flying through the air. When paramedics arrived, Milner was brought to Vancouver’s Lions Gate hospital, where he was treated for injuries and like a minor celebrity after word spread of his encounter. This still makes me anxious. I did a solo ride from Philly to Rochester, NY and while I carried bear spray, i was still (probably irrationally) nervous about bears. Fortunately I only saw one from a distance and it ran away, but that was enough for me to say nope! not risking night riding. I'd love to understand better what to do about the chase instinct. If, say you don't notice the bear but it notices you (such as night riding), and it starts chasing, should you just stop and yell at it? yell while riding? ride like you're gonna die? maybe assume you don't have anything but your bike to defend yourself.

Growing concerned over his injuries, Milner asked to borrow the bystander’s e-bike so he could get to a shelter area. He rode the bike cautiously, holding the bike with one hand and using his thumb on his injured arm to inch the throttle forward. At first, I thought I was hallucinating. That looks like a bear,I thought as the critter leaped out of the woods into the middle of the bike path, but it’s too big to be a bear.

I did a flip over him. I pretty much kissed the bear and then I guess I flew through the air,” Milner told North Shore News. The 30-year-old landed hard against his side and the bear – likely frightened – bolted into the woods. I have some good friends that hunt. I don't, but I also don't have a strong opinion so please don't come down on me. I've heard similar stories of hunters rationalizing their sport by saying that if the deer populations weren't "controlled" by hunting, there would be too many dear and and not enough food, so they would stave. So hunting them is actually is a very humane thing to do. I wonder if the deer got a vote on this, they might just want to take a chance on starving - I would.

The bear looked at me as if it, too, couldn’t believe its eyes and then turned and ran straight down the Stower Seven Lakes Trail, just west of Amery, Wisconsin.About a quarter mile down the trail, he crashedthrough the underbrush into a cornfield. If you are traveling extensively in grizzly country, I highly recommend reading more about discerning grizzly bear behavior and learning how to react. If you are camping in bear country, hang your food and cooking gear 10 feet high in a tree and 100 yards (300 feet) from camp. You’re also advised to cook your food 100 yards from camp and change out of the clothes you cooked in, leaving them at the same distance. As I slowly moved on, I took extra precautions, ringing the bell on my bike and yelling, “Hey bear, hey bear! You better watch out, I’ve got a jingle bell here!”

For years I've heard deer hunters rationalize their "sport' by saying there are too many deer, the deer have become a nuisance, etc. When bears reduce the number of deer, however, the hunters want to shoot more bears. Robert (Bob) Downes March 16, 2017, 7:38 AM
