Fruit Directory

The first cohort of around 75 learners gathered for their first in-person event on the university’s campus near Newport, marking the start of a nine-month course. Rob’s ones are mulched with large woodchips, mainly to keep the weeds down and beat grass competition. They are also liberally fed with cow manure, compost and other goodies. These very typical New Zealand fruit were inherited from our British settler past and they thrive on the West Coast, especially if you have the canny, green-fingered talents of a retiree and treat them with the attention they crave. You can bonsai them in individual pots – large if possible to retain water and well mulched for summer – so they are mobile and you gain better positions in the sun for ripening fruit. If well-fed, those green bullets do indeed swell and ripen to red, orange, or even purple berries, bursting with tart (but not sour), ripe goodness in summer. Speak to them, tell them stories, sing to them, etc. A gramophone will suffice.

Mid-August. Small, yellow/red apple with intensejuicyflavour. Skin can be affected by scab, but flavourunimpaired. Pax: dark red when fully ripe, large and sweet berries but requires pruning to thin out and shape its vigorous, spreading nature, virtually spineless at maturity. We have been voted ‘Traveller’s Choice 2023 and in the top 10% in the UK’ on Trip advisor, and we are rated ‘Excellent’. Dine with confidence! our restaurant has consistently been awarded a ‘5 Star Hygiene’ Rating year after year. We always use only the finest ingredients and where possible always source locally.

Along with other thorny things like totara and gorse, cattle will avoid them unless fed hard, but horses or goats will not blink at the odd spine, so you do need to protect them. Wadworth’s brewery team brew a core range of beers and a minimum of eight seasonal beers a year. Farmer’s Glory has stood the test of time and remains the only one to be brewed every August in readiness for the harvest. It will be available in pubs as cask ale throughout September. One of the school’s core purposes is to develop new talent in the agri-food sector and develop knowledge of sustainable food supply. That knowledge sharing will be critical, and we hope that this group of learners will go on to continue disseminating what they gain here even further through the industry.” Early-late September. Red-flushed, conical apple, medium sized fruit. Flesh is white, chewy with a hint of strawberry. At its best, one of the best flavoured apples we grow. A choice variety, but scab can be a problem. This apple originates in Scotland, but does not quite match the official description! May be mis-named. The picture above shows my ever-vigilant organic friends’ collection in full fruit over summer. Their bushes are above waist height, planted into the ground, and mulched with sphagnum moss for weed suppression and moisture retention.
