About this deal

Dipping your brush into these smaller pans, especially the half-pan, can damage a larger brush by bending the bristles. Gansai Tambi paints are high-quality Japanese handmade, solid watercolours that behave in a similar way to gouache. The colours of traditional Japanese gansai sets are often different from those in Western watercolours.

The box is light, but has nothing to keep the lid closed, and the pans are loose, not fastened in any way. Originally used with large Japanese brushes on rice paper for quick and efficient paintings or underpaintings, they perform better when used wet on dry paper. The colours themselves are intense, rich and can be watered down quite considerably without losing any vibrancy. This is traditionally favoured as it dissolves easily in water and is absorbed into deeper layers of the paper when the paint dries. You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice. I have tried various metallic paints, brush pens and even metallic inks in the past, yet none come close in quality to these two pans! These high quality paints, made in Japan by a 100 year old paint maker, can be used directly out of the box with a wet paintbrush - either thinly in translucent washes, or by layering for a bolder effect. I bought Kuretake Gansai Tambi watercolours (36) about 8 months ago and dropped the box, mixing everything up.

Water is brighter than paint, so often the more water the brighter the color when wet, and the duller it will be once dry. Each box also includes a color chart so you can swatch the colors yourself and distinguish between them quickly.
