I think technique should be handled by the teacher, and I prefer books that don't try too hard in that respect.One of the essential drumming books, Basic Drumming, written by Joel Rothman, covers all the basic drumming styles and techniques, just like it’s presented in the title. I'm very fond of Peters's materials, and this may be the best book here for serious, talented, mature beginners.

This is not a method book at all, but it is mentioned so often on the internet as the only snare drum book people use, I should talk about it on the same terms as these other books— how it functions as a beginning snare drum book. Mark Wessels has crafted his lessons in a way that will allow any beginner to learn to drum in a systematic manner. The one line exercises are just multiple measures of the same rhythm— if that was what I wanted for this purpose, I would use Reed. These guys are not only the nicest people on Planet Earth, but the most focused and well prepared professionals, who work with infectious smiles on their faces and make you feel and sound the very BEST you can!

If you are totally new to music and drumming, you will find this especially useful because you’ll probably find the answer to any question you have about the fundamentals of drumming in here. I do teach beginners some exercises from its first page, and sometimes the first short roll combinations. A book on drumming is a good place to start but you should also use CDs, DVDs, lessons, video tutorials, etc. This is a great book to tackle at the beginning of your drumming journey, it gets into some basic snare drum playing, which will build a good foundation for you. The book also provides detailed breakdowns of the most significant drum grooves from the previous century, allowing drummers to visualize the rhythms.
