Description

A number of notable castles and ruins adorn the heights above the Moselle valley and many are visible on a boat trip on the Moselle. Vin de Moselle: The "Moselle" Country". Archived from the original on 2006-05-18 . Retrieved 2007-09-09.

On 4 March 1790 Moselle became one of the original 83 departments created during the French Revolution. Opt for a convenient door-to-door service with transport from your home to your choice of regional airport or train station, available as an added optional with every holiday. Wine lovers will be in their element on a Moselle River cruise. The Romans planted the first vines here in the 1st century and the slopes are still covered in vineyards to this day. If you’re looking for the Moselle River on a map, you’ll find the tributary to the west of the Rhine. You can expect similar scenery to its parent river, too – think charming villages, hilltop castles and hairpin bends. City-wise, things are on a much smaller scale. Skyscraper-filled metropolises aren’t the Moselle Valley’s thing. Instead, you can look forward to ancient cities, like Koblenz, where you can take the cable car up to the hilltop Ehrenbreitstein Fortress – the second-largest of its kind in Europe. Plus, you can step foot in Germany’s oldest city, Trier, which is a treasure chest of Roman ruins. It’s the Moselle River’s villages that steal visitors’ hearts, though. There’s Bernkastel-Kues, which looks just like a Disney-designed film set. Its cobbled streets are lined with wonky, half-timbered buildings. What’s more, they often house traditional wine taverns, so you can head inside for a tasting of the local Riesling. Winding round a few more bends, you’ll come across Cochem. This photogenic town’s arguably one of the prettiest in the Moselle Valley – which is saying something. Its riverside promenade is liveliest during the wine festivals of June and August. A 15-minute walk from the centre will lead you to the town’s 1,000-year-old castle. Plus, south of the town, Europe’s steepest vineyard – Bremmer Calmont – blankets the hillside. Show Keep your noise to a minimum and don’t shout. This prevents unwanted attention from reporting eyes, if you are not making too much noise and keeping the night time noise to a minimum then you should not have any dramas. Bright lamps at night combined with the indicator volume turned to the max, is a sure way to give your position away. A small head torch is more than adequate for any night sessions.Use down arrow key to expand the menu and up arrow key to collapse the menu and hit enter to select the link If you do not receive an ATOL Certificate then the booking will not be ATOL protected. The Moselle winegrowing region lies along the Moselle with a cultivated area of about 10,540ha (26,000 acres). The largest part, currently just under 9,000ha (22,000 acres), is on German soil in the states of Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland; the Luxembourg part has an area of about 1,300ha (3,200 acres) (see Wine in Luxembourg). Upstream on the Moselle the vineyards extend into France as far as Seille in the region of Côtes de Moselle with an area of 130ha (320 acres) and to the region around Toul ( Côtes de Toul) covering 110ha (270 acres). Questions of environmental degradation were politicized at the end of the 19th century. Since then, one academic has argued that a consensus has been reached in the region regarding pollution, which is seen as the price of continuing the steel industry.
