Projectors are pretty power-hungry, and in general, they usually consume more power than a telly. All of the ones on our list connect to mains power for movie night, but if you’re taking the show on the road you’ll want to know about projectors with built-in batteries. The Anker Nebula Capsule Laser 3 doesn't look like much, resembling an oversized soda can that weighs about 2 pounds, but it is actually one of the more impressive mini projectors we've seen. Built around a small laser-phosphor light source and a 1080p DLP chip, it offers Android TV 11 for streaming via Wi-Fi and an 8-watt speaker that can deliver enough volume to fill a medium or large family room. It also supports up to 4K (3,840-by-2,160-pixel) HDR input, downconverting the resolution to its native 1080p and handling HDR well enough to make HDR movies on disc look at least as good as their SDR versions—something that isn't true for much of the competition. Its onboard battery is rated at 2.5 hours in the default battery mode—long enough for a full-length movie—or 8 hours in Bluetooth speaker mode. Who It's For The angle and focus can be adjustable as well as a timer. It is quite compact and light, easy to maneuver from place to place.

That said, if you're looking for a big picture then the price differences start to disappear. 4K TVs become very expensive at their largest sizes, and projectors effortlessly deliver bigger images than even the biggest mainstream TVs.

The biggest issue for gaming on a projector is input lag, which is the time in milliseconds (ms) that a display adds between receiving a video frame and putting it on the screen. Input lag can be critical in first-person shooter games, where a short lag will help you survive to the next frame, and a long lag is equivalent to having pathetically slow reflexes. A lot of projectors have unacceptably long lag measures for gaming. Others are fully competitive with the lag intervals gamers are used to seeing in gaming monitors and flat-screen TVs. Lasers are better still, with a similar lifespan to LED but much better brightness. However, they generally cost more too. It’s a different story when you start looking at ultra-short throw models (UST), though. These are designed for smaller spaces and can sit right close up to the wall (on your TV stand or cabinet) and many can display a massive image from around 40cm away from the surface you’re projecting onto. For minimal home decor, you may consider USTs as a replacement for a traditional flatscreen TV – they’re just as versatile. All-in-One Projectors

The models that tend to be more affordable are those that give you an immersive experience, to give the feel of being somewhere other-worldly, and the colors and patterns are loosely 'inspired' by space — nebulas, auroras and galaxies. You've likely seen them at parties, in games rooms, in spas and so on.

Most projector manufacturers divide their projector lines into categories. Common names for models meant for home use include home cinema, home theater, pro cinema, home entertainment, gaming, streaming, and smart (which is usually just another name for streaming). For business use, the common (and mostly interchangeable) names are business, education, and data projectors, which I'll refer to collectively as business projectors. The key advantage of ultra short throw (UST) projectors? Giving you a big image from close to the screen, so you don't have to run cables through walls and ceilings. The key advantage of the Epson LS800? It has an even shorter throw than most. It can actually fill a 120-inch wall-mounted screen without having to pull the furniture it's resting on away from the wall. The four colored lights project a complete starry sky that may also contribute to the cultivating of creativity and imagination. The pop-up home planetarium gives a 3D structure perforated with the major constellations of the northern hemisphere, which then instructs you to turn on the torch of a smartphone and place it inside to project the stars across the walls of a darkened room.

A hands-on star projector for home learning. It functions as both a night light and a slide projector. We’ve explained the difference between short-throw and ultra-short-throw projectors above, and the screen size will depend on how close you put the projector to the wall or screen. Before you buy, it’s worth thinking about where you can put the projector in your home. The spherical projector isn't fixed to the supplied base so gives maximum positioning flexibility. Point it at walls, ceilings and even the floor if you have high shelving, and you won't have a problem angling the Class 2 laser away from vulnerable eyes.Perhaps you’re no longer able to go out and observe the stars yourself or are after a space themed gift for the kids. Or maybe you want a relaxing light show to help you drift off to sleep. Approachability is key for mainstream acceptance of any new product, and Samsung has nailed this aspect with The Freestyle. Simply put, any projector which is ready to go within minutes of being taken out of the box is a triumph of design and engineering, and should be celebrated. The 5-Watt LED projects pin-sharp images across the whole projection, from edge to edge. The operation is quiet, and there are three sleep timers for automatic shut-off. There's no remote, app control, or in-built speaker, but these aren't functions you'll need if all you're doing is selecting your desired disk and switching the projector on to gaze at the stars. Want to learn about the stars and have a fun practical project? Then this star projector kit might be the option for you. It’s easy to get lost in the specs when delving into projector display technologies, but the key thing to note is that lasers are more durable, responsive and longer-lasting than traditional projector bulbs, making these options a worthwhile investment.
