I didn’t know much about the book before I picked it up and was nearly put off by people talking about the author writing through as ged younger self. She is also the author and illustrator of numerous picture books, including The Tiger Who Came to Tea, which was first published in 1968 and has since sold more than one million copies worldwide. Papa can’t find much work as a journalist, as the Swiss want to remain neutral and not antagonize their neighbor to the north.

This kind of book lets you relate to the main character, in the same oblivious way you were as a child. But what a loss of beautiful literature and her art to the world of her family hadn't fled in time to save their lives.

Now when I think of brilliant titles and how they can be a glimpse into the story one is about to discover, this is the first book that comes to mind. I learned a lot about the life of a refugee, from the child’s eye viewpoint despite being long past childhood. Her and her brother Max were individuals who fared well and thrived in their final country and Judith lived a long and worthwhile life getting an OBE for her services to holocaust education and children's literature. This book absolutely fizzes - Anna's is so lively, intelligent, naïve, hungry to learn and eat up life - but it also dips into despair and a sense of the meaninglessness of life, the personal suffering which can overwhelm anyone at times, making the `in love with it all' feel like an unbearable sham.

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys historical fiction, especially The Book Thief since I personally enjoyed this book a lot more than that one. out of 5 stars Terrific at capturing the fear, the despair, the drama of living through the blitz and charting what happened thereafter. It was a privilege and delight to read this book by Judith Kerr suitable both for young adults and grownups and to reflect how difficult life was for refugees fleeing the Nazis, safe despite bombs and a British sort of benign prejudice - if there is such a thing. They also learn the Nazis appeared at their Berlin residence to confiscate their passports and bar them from leaving the country.

When there was music on the radio in the lounge it seemed to her unbearably beautiful, and the sight of the dead men's clothes at work made her unbearably sad. However, unless your child is especially sensitive about anything I have mentioned I believe that anyone 10+ would enjoy this story.

The chief point about these last, admittedly wretched years……is that it is infinitely better to be alive that dead.

Have read numerous books regarding WWII but this was from a different angle again and challenges me to understand how hard it is when people are displaced due to war and that they can end up not belonging anywhere.
