In Pakistan’s most populous state,​ ​Punjab​, nearly 1,000 people were arrested and the army was deployed. At least 25 police vehicles were set on fire in the province, with 130 officers injured in clashes and more than a dozen official buildings looted, the government said, blaming Khan’s supporters.

If he is found guilty, Khan is likely to be disqualified from politics. Khan had travelled to Islamabad on Tuesday morning to seek bail in two corruption cases, some of dozens involving corruption, sedition and terrorism that he is facing. The arrest warrant for Khan was released soon after, dated 1 May, stating he was accused of “corruption and corrupt practices”. On Tuesday night, the Islamabad high court ruled that the arrest was legal and that Khan had ignored several notices to appear in court. Mr Khan sold himself and the PTI as a party of "change", saying he was distinct from the elite political class and promising to eliminate corruption. And last year, human rights groups accused Mr Khan of being an apologist for rapists following comments he made on an increase in sexual assaults.

As the cost of living in Pakistan rose, the country's opposition parties — made up of the dynastic families Mr Khan once toppled — said he had failed to revive the economy and united to form a no-confidence motion against him.
