Description

Holbein acrylic gouache is technically an acrylic paint (acrylic polymer emulsion, a type of plastic binder that seals pigment like glue or varnish would) but there are differences between "acrylic gouache" and just "matte acrylic". HAG's flow/disperse rate in wet wash, as well as the matte finish once dried, has a similar feel and appearance to a water-soluble gouache (like those made using a re-wettable gum arabic or dextrin based binder). After almost five hours (divided over three days, mind you) I painted all 102 colour swatches. This sounds like a lot of work. Correction: this is a lot of work. But it’s worth it, trust me. If you are using it like watercolour then some of the colours may not be bound well enough to be waterproof. With head offices in Osaka Japan, Holbein Artist Colours was formed over 120 years ago, and took the name of the much revered European artist Hans Holbein in the 1930s. From that time, Holbein’s presence has been significant, not only in Southeast Asia, but also in North America, Australia and Europe. Holbein colour chemists, using only the finest pigments available, have achieved the highest standards of quality control in the industry, working to precise standards at each stage of the manufacturing process. The result is unerring consistency from production run to production run. Holbein are unique in the art material trade because they do not produce any entry level/student quality colour products; each of their colour ranges is adapted to meet the special requirements of the professional/serious artist with permanence, brilliance, and technique in mind.

These paints are not like regular gouache. It’s made by Holbein, an art materials company based in Japan. They only produce high-end art materials and no study level supplies, which is quite unique. Tube Design: Sometimes the large hole in the lid makes it challenging to dispense the exact amount of paint needed, leading to potential waste. But if you compare to acrylic or oil paint, acryla has less adhesion to the surface so make sure the canvas is well prepared with gesso.I have done tests with the Turner Acryl Gouache and found that if it is really diluted to a watery wash, then it doesn’t have enough binder left to be waterproof, it is stretched too thin. Although this is the case with all acrylics it seems it is even more so with the Turner. This led me to think that perhaps the Turner Acryl Gouache is super-loaded with pigment in relation to the amount of acrylic binder. I am doing more tests while in isolation to see if I am right. I will be comparing the dilution of 4 kinds of acrylic – heavy body, fluid, ink and acryl gouache acrylics – to see when they stop being waterproof. All in all, I’m really pleased with these paints and I am looking forward to make many more illustrations with them. You also can’t re-activate the paint but that’s because it’s partially acrylics. I don’t mind that much because I’m a fast painter. But if you know you’re a slow painter, it’s something to take into account.Greyish Colours: A range of elegant “greyish” pastel colours, perfect for subtle expression. Quiet tones that can be used without making your work too dark or murky. Although I prefer acrylic paint, I have worked with all water-based paints (other than egg tempera) and I will say the acrylic gouache paint was easy enough to use, although it did take me a couple days to adjust to the difference. After some trial and error, I discovered the best palette to use was a small metal one. If a wet palette is left overnight, one is likely to end up with a watery mess. I found this out the hard way! When my painting I dry I try adding some details with pencil but because Acryla Gouache dries up more plastic than regular gouache, this is not easy. When the paint dries it is more plastic so adding layers with pencil is not ideal. I manage though, I’m stubborn like that 😉 Color Wheel Rubber Stamp for Watercolor Pie Chart, Ink, Acrylic, etc. Organize Your Mixing Recipes and Monochromatic Studies (Select Mounting Option)
