Overall, not an awful album and certainly completely listenable and even brilliant at times, but this is far from essential and is quite unmemorable, generic, and definitely not new..

The band's previous release "The Heart Of Everything" was also a step down, when compared to their masterpieces "Mother Earth" and "The Silent Force", but it still contained some very good songs, amazing vocals and preserved the band's sound/identity. This album is just disappointing from all perspectives. A shame... April 2011/7502/ "Official Albums Chart Top 100". Official Charts Company. Retrieved 17 August 2016.

Tracklist

The Unforgiving is the fifth studio album by Dutch symphonic metal band Within Temptation, released by Roadrunner Records on 29 March 2011. [3] It was a concept album as one part of a transmedia storytelling project, which accompanied the release of three short films and a series of six comic books. The album followed the band's pattern of incorporating new musical elements on each release, this time marking a major transition point for the band and featuring more pop and 80s influences. Lyrically, the band focused on telling a story with specific characters, also present in the films and comic books. The sound quality is superb. Everything seems to be mixed well together. This band was actually a recommendation from my female metalhead friend of mine. I didn't like the album initially because I didn't think it was heavy enough. Then I brought down my expectations and took it for however it is. It's a great "chill-to" album. The music is great and just hard enough to make it metal but not really that heavy. The main focus seems to be the voice. The acoustic guitars too are fantastic. Everything seems to fit together on here. Some songs are heavy but the main focus for them are epic songs. What a solid release despite the critics. But hey! I'm considered a critic myself. I think "Shot in the Dark" is their most pivotal song on this entire album! But the music on here is catchy and anything but brutal. I'm not a huge fan of alternative metal. But I do dig Lacuna Coil though Within Temptation is pretty much all clean vocals. I like that better actually, especially the clean female vocals like on Epica's albums where Simone sings. Cristina Scabbia is also a great vocalist for Lacuna Coil. I think this band has been around and a lot of discography behind them. Definitely a solid band to change it up from the brutal stuff that I like.We told him what kind of movies we liked, what kind of books we read, and he thought about it and he came up with a basic idea, like 2 or 3 lines. The story is about people who have done bad things. Not because they are bad, but because they made bad decisions." Australiancharts.com – Within Temptation – The Unforgiving". Hung Medien. Steffen Hung. "Greek charts portal". greekcharts.com. Archived from the original on 3 December 2013 . Retrieved 28 December 2012. Poor Sharon sounds as though she is being constrained by the music; her voice simply doesn't seem to soar like it usually does. It doesn't create a Gothic atmosphere. It doesn't have the power of the operatic vocals found on other releases. It is just plain and pop sounding. The music is unfocused, generic, and ultimately forgettable. Gone are the Gothic nuances and orchestral bombast found on previous Within Temptation releases. In their place we find generic euro-pop metal. The guitars crank out unmemorable riffs that are nothing spectacular and the bass is not quite here. Of course, this genre never had the best drummers and this band is no exception. You won't find anything awe-inspiring musically here except maybe a few melodic riffs here and there. After an amazing LP and a stunning live album, Within Temptation return with "The Unforgiving" and unfortunately I am having a hard time forgiving some of the questionable changes (mistakes) the band has made to their sound since "The Heart of Everything". Austriancharts.at – Within Temptation – The Unforgiving" (in German). Hung Medien. Retrieved 17 August 2016. The other benefit from the sound change was more focus on the actual band members. On earlier albums, the band's actual presence (that is, without guest musicians for the symphonic parts) tended to focus almost exclusively on Sharon— not that she isn't a marvelous vocalist, of course, but the band consistent of six talents rather than just one. We actually have guitar solos now— in about half the songs on the album; in fact; including "Shot In The Dark," "Faster," "Iron," "Lost" and "A Demon's Fate"— where the only song with one before now was in "Dark Wings," by guest musician Arjen Lucassen. "A Demon's Fate" is probably the fastest song the band has ever written, and is both beautiful and complex, as well as instantly memorable. Chances are it's already replaced "Hand Of Sorrow" as my personal favorite.Kerrang! were more negative, giving it a "good" score of just 3 out of 5 and deeming it "pretty unsatisfying", while conceding it to be "flawless and expertly crafted". [33] Q gave it just 1 out of 5, the album's lowest rating, labelling the band "the metal T'Pau". [35] Wyróżnienia – Złote płyty CD - Archiwum - Przyznane w 2011 roku" (in Polish). we wanted to put all the money into the movies. You have a budget and then you have to make choices and, to be honest, MTV and everything, it is not so big anymore. And when you make videos, they always say "you can't use blood, you can't use guns, you can't use..." and we wanted to use everything: blood, guns... everything!" I always knew and felt that Within Temptation were a creative and promising band with some good and innovating ideas. Even though I don't adore any of their albums, I think that every output they have released has a special and unique flow and a couple of addicting, inspiring and catchy songs. Now the band decided to work on a conceptual album based on a comic book. The interesting artwork, the great booklet and several well done short films complete the ambitious musical project and are really promising. In searching for a new concept, they approached the writer of The Chronicles of Spellborn comics, who introduced the band to Steven O'Connell. However, upon his first meeting with the band, he failed to impress them with ideas involving zombies and fantasy, while they were hoping for a more mature approach rather than something unclear and superficial. Within Temptation" still knows how to make it dramatic and theatrical, the intro to "Faster" sounds like a song on a preview for an action movie, and the intro to "Murder" sounds like a song that would be on a preview for a thriller movie. Even in Sinead" the one song on this album that sounds like it would be played at a dance party has a symphonic theatrical incline that makes you feel like that you're still listening to "Within Temptation" no matter how different it is.
