After Noel Gallagher and his High Flying Birds promised an upcoming album when they released their Johnny Marr-assisted new single at the tail end of 2022, the former Oasis guitarist has finally announced that a new LP, Council Skies, will arrive this summer. He added: “Top Of The Pops on TV transformed your Thursday night into this fantasy world, and that’s what I think music should be. If there’s the odd stray into old habits – the plod of ‘There She Blows’, for one – such feelings are masked by what now seems like a blatant decision to not repeat the past. Gallagher’s subsequent three EPs released between 2019-20 seemed to reinforce the point that he was determined to push back against what he was best at.

A decade since the formation of High Flying Birds and having achieved four UK Number One albums, ‘Council Skies’, produced by Noel and Paul ‘Strangeboy’ Stacey, is the band’s fourth studio album and Noel’s most complete solo statement to date. Top of the Pops on TV transformed your Thursday night into this fantasy world, and that’s what I think music should be. For this new record, it was the first thing I wrote, the first thing I demoed, and the first thing I finished, so it’s only right that it’s the first thing people get to hear,” Gallagher previously said of “Pretty Boy. Five singles have been released from the album so far: "Pretty Boy", "Easy Now", "Dead to the World", "Open the Door, See What You Find" and the title track "Council Skies". Directed by long-time High Flying Birds collaborators Dan Cadan and Jonathan Mowatt, the music video also features a cameo from another Mancunian legend… Sign up for the official Video YouTube premiere here, taking place tonight at 6PM BST.

If he was talking about his material under the Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds moniker in comparison to, say, Oasis’ ‘Don’t Look Back In Anger’ or ‘Wonderwall’; he is, of course, completely correct. Council Skies is the fourth High Flying Birds album, following 2011's self-titled debut, Chasing Yesterday (2015) and Who Built The Moon? There's a bit in the song when I was writing it, where a phrase was missing - I didn't know what that phrase was gonna be. Speaking on the Radio X Evening Show with Dan O'Connell, Noel explained the inspiration behind the name.

This new single is the fourth to be revealed from the forthcoming album, following the singles ‘Pretty Boy’ featuring Johnny Marr and ‘Easy Now’ , plus ‘Dead To The World’ which Noel says is, “by some distance my favourite tune on the album. I guess to me, it reminded me of my youth and all my dreams all took place underneath the council skies. marks 100 years since the ground was opened and forever remains Manchester City FC’s spiritual home.Elsewhere, Gallagher further spotlights his newfound love for The Cure (that first surfaced with Who Built The Moon?

Easy Now, with its balladeering verses bursting into singalong choruses, is stirring stuff, and highlights the inherent empathy contained within many of his best songs. It is the first album Gallagher has recorded in his own recording studio: Lone Star Studios with string sessions taking place at Abbey Road Studios in April 2022.there is also much greying meat-and-two-veg guitar pop, which occasionally veers into old-man gentleness (see: the actually rather Blur-ish Dead to the World). There’s little resemblance to the lumpy lad-rock that he and his brother Liam turned to when it all started to sour, but lush ballads and purposeful choices that move the sound on even if the instantly-recognisable voice remains a constant. Alas, with Liam and Noel still scrapping, lately via the mediums of talkSPORT and Twitter, it looks like the closest we’ll get is another High Flying Birds record.
