About this deal

This thin relation to ‘Outlander’ would have guaranteed Gabaldon readers would make the trek to Donati’s series, which is the reason I picked up ‘Into the Wilderness’. You'd be reading Elizabeth's POV for pages and then suddenly it would be Nathaniel's, no break or warning.

But Kenneth Swanson’s Into the Wilderness is an inviting treatment of sin because this discussion is grounded in the notion that there is a possibility for healing and new life to be found when sin is honestly named and courageously explored in the light and love of God. Just because I didn't fall in love with INTO THE WILDERNESS doesn't mean I don't appreciate well-written stories by authors other than DG.Please see the pinned post for an overview of what you'll find on this weblog, and what has been moved to the wiki (including the FAQ page). And, this is something I frequently remark on, both her male and female protagonists are equally compelling. This is an exciting story of what it might have been like to travel with Moses, seen through the eyes of his manservant and friend, the warrior Joshua. One day the subject of the Battle of Saratoga came up and Diana mentioned that she had used the battle as a setting for a scene, and this happened just as I was writing a similar scene. At first they are an enchanting couple, shooting at bad guys and making athletic love in unlikely woodsy settings.

The many subplots are skillfully interwoven, and the author's sheer stamina commands respect; but the novel is complicated, not complex, overstuffed with familiar, featherweight themes. But it had that headstrong female character, the dangerous-but-charming love interest, the chorus of earthy and interesting background characters. But teaching isn't something she wants to give up, and with the help of Nathaniel, who's given her the hilarious nickname of Boots, she gets her school. Then the charm falters as their adventures are padded with details that embroider without embellishing. Diana Gabaldon’s popular Outlander series, and the TV adaptations, are full of danger, steamy passion, and Scottish history. It was at those times when I think Chekhov’s idiom of ‘leave them cold’ could have worked better, if Donati had left some motivations unsaid. When the series took that trajectory Gabaldon introduced Native American’s to the storyline, and if you’re like me you especially loved the character arc of Young Ian who went on to become an Indian warrior.

INTO THE WILDERNESS by Sara Donati has been an absolute pleasure to read and a experience I won't soon forget. With the strain of relations among the natives, part-natives and the white newcomers, in a world where life seems to sometimes hang by a thread, Elizabeth also finds that a life in the wilderness has no end of lessons to teach her about life, love and what is worth sacrificing for. Epic in scope, each book weighing in at around 900 pages, this series weaves a tapestry of fact and fiction, sweeping us into another time and place, all of it beginning with a forbidden affair between an unconventional Englishwoman and an American frontiersman.I started this Outlandish Observations blog in August, 2008, as a central repository for news and information about Diana Gabaldon's books, including new and upcoming releases. Weaving a vibrant tapestry of fact and fiction, Into the Wilderness sweeps us into another time and place. To me as an OUTLANDER fan, it was both fun to see them mentioned, and more than a little bit jarring.

Well, to be precise, she asked me about the two-paragraph bit in which she refers to Jamie, Claire, and Young Ian as though they were real historical characters (she doesn't "use" them _as_ characters in her book), and I said sure, I thought that would be funny; let's see if anybody notices. The reference to these characters is very brief and matter-of-fact, and it doesn't have any bearing on the rest of the story.

But despite a devastating personal loss, the Bonners persevere, with Hannah, Nathaniel’s half-Indian daughter, working as a doctor in training. She is currently documenting her mission of finding a better book boyfriend than Jamie Fraser at her blog Findingmynextoutlander.
