About this deal

On the last night of her life, in a prison cell far below Edinburgh’s High Street, convicted witch Geillis Duncan receives a mysterious visitor. Luckenbooth, sprawling the decades with its themes of repression and revenge, brings back something that has long been lacking in the British novel: ambition.

There seems so much crammed into the hundred pages, even some welcome black humour, which is in sharp contrast to Luckenbooth, where relatively little took place in a bloated excess of pages. We meet Geillis Duncan, a young maidservant from Tranent who has been convicted of witchcraft in the infamous North Berwick witch trials. James set sail from Leith to fetch Anne personally – although he had a retinue of some 300 men with him. The Skinny‘s Alistair Braidwood is typical of the nauseating consensus when urging us that Hex is “both a timely and timeless publication.

there is so much to be said not only about this particular story, but about all of the women and children who suffered such extreme notions of torture and death at the hands of men and their fearfulness for witches and powerful women. Yet the book has its moments of lyricism and joy, recollections of days by the sea shore, frustrated hopes of a simple life. Me hubiera gustado saber mejor el trasfondo de lo que sucedió y cómo esos malnacidos consiguieron que nadie condenara sus actos.

Luckily things are changing, but there’s still a long path, but if we women unite all together, we can truly leave a mark and cause a great impact. She makes us think about all the injustices that are allowed to thrive and, more importantly, who benefits from those injustices. On this, the last night of her life, in a prison cell several floors below Edinburgh’s High Street, convicted witch Geillis Duncan receives a mysterious visitor – Iris, who says she comes from a future where women are still persecuted for who they are and what they believe. Un homenaje que me aparecido perfecto para leer entre lecturas y que permite dar a conocer a una de las muchas víctimas que dejó la horrible caza de brujas. It uses magic to beam Iris into the sixteenth century whilst refusing to use magic to allow Geillis to escape from her jail cell. I hope you enjoyed reading about them and I really hope you’ll give this novel a chance, it’s a little gem. I would like to reassure you that five hundred years from now the fine line of misogyny no longer elongates from uncomfortable to fatal, yet I cannot.
