About this deal

In September 2023, the school joined Star Academies, one the country’s leading multi-academy trusts. Understanding past events and people and their significance gives students a better insight into the world around them.

The photos show how good the RFP photographers were - they knew their trade and provided fantastic snapshots, moments caught in time that I know people enjoy seeing. Almost half of the length of the platform was covered with a canopy which consisted of twelve glazed pitches and under this were two platform shelters, one longer than the other. The two foundation stones were placed by the Mayors of Rawtenstall and Bacup in 1911 to mark the start of a two year building programme. These adverts enable local businesses to get in front of their target audience – the local community. The slide show tradition dates back to at least October 1937, when the society celebrated moving into new premises at the former Zion Baptist Church by producing a lantern show of ‘Bacup Past and Present’ for posterity.

The photographs were lost when the Free Press moved from its Rawtenstall office in 2009 office and were discovered being kept in a warehouse for a number of years before our nostalgia columnist Peter began his restoration project. Bacup railway station served the town of Bacup, Rossendale, Lancashire, England, from 1852 until closure in 1966 and was the terminus of two lines; one from Rawtenstall and the other from Rochdale. I am pleased that I have been able to play a part in preserving the archive of photographs, but without the Free Press, they would not have existed. Trish Kenny, who had saved them and looked after them, said she felt it was a weight off her shoulders to have someone do something to preserve the photos. A traditional pub about half a mile out of the town centre, with roaring fires in the winter, a string of family fun festivals throughout the summer, and their very own resident Alien, keeping an eye on all who enter!I did think about the Dapol canopy but it wasn't quite right for the location, and I do love scratchbuilding buildings for some mad reason. He was one of the fou-nder members of Bacup Camera Club and some of his original glass slides survived for many years. I did this because as there are so many large panes, if I had stuck the glazing on the inside, it would have shown up but with hindsight, I should have made the main sub-structure from clear plastikard and used overlays throughout.

That evening, with the girlfriend out on the beer and me home alone (I know, something not quite right there), I pressed on with the curved crossover, which proved to be quite tricky to get right but with a few choice words that the swear filter doesn't like and a few adjustments, I got there in the end. Street begins to climb earlier and then levels out (although still an inch or so below track level). The format of the windows will be the same as the real pub but when you trim mounting card down to a 1mm column (for want of a better word), it's a bit flimsy so I'll use Plastikard. All buildings have been scratch-built or will be (a few placeholders in use at the moment) and are based on real buildings either in or near Bacup.
