About this deal

A Little Life is an immensely powerful and heartbreaking novel of brotherly love and the limits of human endurance. Jacket shows a one-inch closed tear to rear panel, light rubbing, and some discolouration to verso (at top edge, corresponding to above-noted discolouration. They are starting careers, finding a purpose, not earning much though they don’t much care, coming to terms with their diverse backgrounds, wondering about identity and privilege and purpose.

Yanagihara (The People in the Trees, 2013) takes the still-bold leap of writing about characters who don't share her background; in addition to being male, JB is African-American, Malcolm has a black father and white mother, Willem is white, and "Jude's race was undetermined"—deserted at birth, he was raised in a monastery. We are experiencing delays with deliveries to many countries, but in most cases local services have now resumed.

The narrative delves into Jude's painful history and the enduring impact it has on his life and relationships. If someone has been abused and ISN’T as accomplished, isn’t this person just as worthy of love and understanding? The depth of Jude’s suffering and the affluence of his later life have led some people to question the ‘realism’ of the story. It's Entourage directed by Bergman; it's the great 90s novel a quarter of a century too late; it's a devastating read that will leave your heart, like the Grinch's, a few sizes larger. Dean stiffened, and his little features seemed to gather themselves into a knot in the center of his little face. Only Malcolm never ate the whole of his entrée and never saved the other half either, and when he was finished eating, he put his plate in the center of the table so Willem and JB--who were always hungry--could eat the rest. The only things that register are the friends’ cultural milestones: JB’s retrospective, Willem’s movies (which, incidentally, all have horrible, unlikely titles), Malcolm’s buildings, Jude’s cases.

Yet their greatest challenge, each comes to realize, is Jude himself, by midlife a terrifyingly talented litigator yet an increasingly broken man, his mind and body scarred by an unspeakable childhood, and haunted by what he fears is a degree of trauma that he'll not only be unable to overcome – but that will define his life forever. I became so invested in the characters and their lives that I almost felt unqualified to review this book objectively . But when those secrets come to light, they finally learn that to know Jude St Francis is to understand the limitless potential of love in the face of life. Yet their greatest challenge, each comes to realize, is Jude himself, by midlife a terrifyingly talented litigator yet an increasingly broken man, his mind and body scarred by an unspeakable childhood, and haunted by what he fears is a degree of trauma that he’ll not only be unable to overcome—but that will define his life forever. There is real pleasure in following characters over such a long period, as they react to setbacks and successes, and, in some cases, change.
