Description

Careering centres itself around the pressures women face in the workplace and in the case of this novel within the media industry, where we face criticism and nuclear burnout to become the idealised ‘successful career woman’ with it all. Daisy has also appeared on a number of TV and radio shows including Woman’s Hour, The Today Programme, Soul Music, A Good Read, This Morning and Good Morning Britain. I listened to this on audio book, so that may have made a difference as to why I didn't connect that well to it. Daisy really shows both sides of the story so well- especially with the comparison of Louise, another young woman working with Imogen whose biggest concern is her dad no longer paying her extortionate rent if she doesn’t make something of herself. What I especially loved was the insight into how much wealth and privilege can decide who gets that ‘dream job’ or not.

She's safe there, it keeps her busy at all waking hours and leaves her little time to think of much else. Instead she’s tasked with creating an online magazine aimed at young women - or ‘The Girl’ as Harri likes think of her.I did really enjoy the fist half and the encouraging positive message for women, but I couldn't maintain that interest for the duration of the book. Appallingly funny and ruthlessly honest, CAREERING shines a deeply human light on the exhausting highs and lows of life as a modern working woman. Though entertaining – you can’t help but cringe at some of the situations Imogen finds herself in – the novel takes a hard look at the very real challenges women still face in the workplace today.

Will she wake up to the way she's being exploited before her protege realises that not everything is copy? Exploring the exhausting push-pull of trying to pin down a career you love but that doesn't love you back, Buchanan's book is set to capture the zeitgeist as so many of us question where we're at' Stylistcareering (verb) 1.Appallingly funny and ruthlessly honest, Careering shines a deeply human light on the exhausting highs and lows of life as a modern working woman. Especially in a particular moment when Imogen is pressured to do things that I'm sure are illegal and that unfortunately are not debated as such, just as a work “inconvenience” that soon dissipates when we know that in real life the pressures that we suffer at work can lead us to a deplorable state of mental health.
