the flaws of the people, especially nur, weren’t brushed aside - they had consequences, and that was a thing i enjoyed seeing. There are many thought provoking nuances to this book, the author explores the complexities of cultural racism, lifestyle expectations, family, friendship, mental health struggles, self-harm, anxiety, religion, homosexuality and colourism.

Upon reaching this point in the novel, I was nearly driven to skepticism and disbelief, wondering whether Ali would truly allow this relationship to prosper despite the clearly unhealthy and "subtly" disrespectful dynamic that was developing between the couple on Nur's behalf. Feeling the family pressures on choosing the right woman and keeping up family traditions of letting his parents be involved in who he chooses to marry, Nur keeps Yasmina a secret for 4 years, not even telling his parents they are living together. I think it also helps to see the progression of Nur and Yasmina’s relationship because it helps you understand why Yasmina puts up with Nur, to be blunt about it.Nur, is always shitting on the customs so far so that at the end of the book, a bestfriend of his doesn't even tell him something important about himself. I often felt that actual events inspire the story because of the similarities one can find between the main character and the author. A] clever debut… Ali explores racism, the difficulty of navigating cultural heritage and the travails of early adulthood [with] a climactic sucker punch’ Metro You may also be interested in. They start a conversation--first awkward, then absorbing--that grabs Nur's attention like never before.

Despite my struggles within the story, I can acknowledge that the author is trying to break cultural norms, but also showcases not taking things for granted (i.But as everything he holds dear is challenged, he is forced to ask, is love really a choice for a second-generation immigrant son like him? My grasp of events was also hampered by the flitting between present day (2019) and at various points in the relationship from 2016 onwards, I would have preferred the story to start at the beginning and then move forwards rather than jumping about.

I am a firm believer that when it comes to representation (I'm speaking on my own identities), we are not a monolith, Unless it has problematic elements, what may be good rep to someone from a marginalized group may be bad rep to another person from said marginalized group. He almost wishes that there were something wrong with him, that he might have to go to the hospital after fainting somewhere, delivered to sterile white corridors, be told there are cancerous cells swarming his body.

The story centres on Nur, a young British Pakistani man struggling with the dilemma of introducing his long time Sudanese girlfriend, Jasmina, to his family. It was exhausting witnessing a character who was questioning themselves and their relationship countlessly, with little to no explanation of what their issue was until the very end of the book. Maybe then everything would be okay, because his secret would not be the biggest thing in their world, and maybe he would be able to make everything work.
