My kid did not like the last two books and kept asking when we could re-read Finn Family Moomintroll instead. Meanwhile, Grandpa-Grumble comes to the conclusion that the winter ages people and so decides to go into hibernation in the clothes cupboard like the Ancestor. It doesn't work out too well, but the family manages to reach some level of peace and understanding of their surroundings by the end. Another reviewer, the avowed fan of the Moomin series Leona Wisoker, described the work as being "a terrific mixture of keen psychological insight and Jansson's trademark humor" that left her "aching, wishing Jansson had written more in the series; but all good things must come to an end, and I wouldn't be pleased at all if anyone else dared to pick up the series in her wake. The faint whisper of rain and running water was still there and it had the same tender note of solitude and perfection.I'm glad my library copy was a hardback recent reprint which has Tove's original artwork on, unlike the other recent reprints that have insultingly got an illustrator to recreate an inferior version in pastel colours.
