The mini-series was produced in-house shortly before tax concessions gave a boost to television drama budgets, benefiting mini-series like All the Rivers Run (1983), Bodyline (1984) and A Fortunate Life (1985). While the book is a dynastic saga the producers have focused entirely on the eponymous Lucinda Brayford. The family's social ambitions lead to conflicts between Lucinda and her parents over the attentions of Tony Duff. The breakup of that affair is the most vital part of the book; from then on it peters out in a telescoping of the story of young Stephen, through a poignant bit at Cambridge, on to World War II, pacifism- and death.

As an achievement in story-telling, I found the Australian section more entertaining, as Fred Vane achieves his goal of poverty to riches, while his wife lives down the ignominy of her early married life by purchasing a place in the society she covets.A leisurely book, somewhat old-fashioned in its rhythm, tracing three generations of an Anglo-Australian family.

Edges The collective of the top, fore and bottom edges of the text block of the book, being that part of the edges of the pages of a.books but we didn't think that would have worked, although we do carry a limited amount of other genres. A poor condition book can still make a good reading copy but is generally not collectible unless the item is very scarce. Nevertheless, Stephen is married, and soon after is divorced, the victim of his kind, unsuspecting heart: His wife has run off with a young capitalist. She performs her level best as the beautiful and tragic Lucinda, but the truncation of the story means ultimately that the workings of Lucinda’s mind and heart remain a mystery. We follow the couple to England where the rest of the book takes place and the plot focuses on Hugo's family, lucindas social life which becomes somewhat of a prison, their infidelity, and WWI.
