About this deal

David Gilmour’s biography of Giuseppe di Lampedusa unearths the life story of the creator of The Leopard, one of the great novels of the twentieth century. If this sense fades as you move away from the book, it is only because one’s memory cannot fully retain the pungent artfulness of Lampedusa’s brilliant sentences. In Italy and its Discontents 1980-2001, Paul Ginsborg argues that for the first time, the phrase no longer applies to Italy; with the decline of the industrial working class "the mid-1970s were precisely the moment when everything began to change and not, pace Tomasi di Lampedusa, to stay the same". Lampedusa’s masterpiece, one of the finest works of twentieth century fiction, is set amongst an aristocratic family facing social and political changes in the wake of Garibaldi’s invasion of Sicily in 1860.

The novelist Alberto Moravia thought the novel “right wing,” and others found fault with its pessimism. All that can be said with certainty is that, for most of his life, the last Prince of Lampedusa led a strange and solitary existence. In 1957, Feltrinelli had made its name publishing the first official edition of Boris Pasternak’s “Doctor Zhivago,” which had been smuggled out of Russia. The front courtyard was full of rubble but I remembered the layout of the palace from Lampedusa’s memoirs and knew which way to climb.

Against all our prejudices, we empathise with his subtle, undeceived and fatalistic attempts to preserve his family's virtually feudal power at the time of the Risorgimento, the unification of Italy, in 1860. Full of gorgeous yet fierce, colourful illustrations throughout, I Love Leopard includes everything you could ever want to know about this iconic pattern, all in a covetable, leopard-print package!prophets of the Europe that thought of itself as the hegemony and then was superseded by the United States. As the light improved I could recognise some of the rooms: his mother’s boudoir with its domed ceiling in gold and shades of blue, her dressing room overlooking the Oratory of Santa Zita, the place of Giuseppe’s earliest memory.

With supple and ornate language, the book has an introspective storyline and alludes to the works of Shakespeare, Sterne, Tolstoy, Baudelaire, Keats, Proust and Stendhal. Kaja Solness, a new Norwegian Crime Squad officer, tracks down Hole and asks for his help investigating possible serial killings in Oslo. Buried among them, I found a number of more personal documents: photographs, ancestral correspondence, papers in his own handwriting, letters from his mother which testified to the closeness of their relationship. They thought themselves eternal; but a bomb manufactured in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, was to prove the contrary in 1943. It is accepted by you that Daunt Books has no control over additional charges in relation to customs clearance. The places of his mother’s family have fared no better: at Bagheria the Villa Cutò is now a squalid tenement forming part of the station yard. Although Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa was a prolific reader, until the last few years of his life he had written almost nothing for publication. By the time he adopted the twenty-year-old Lanza, the aging Lampedusa had barely enough money to keep himself in books and pastries, his two daily indulgences.

Where Machiavelli created a myth of action, of the bold ruler who violently tames Fortune, Lampedusa's Sicilian Prince believes the opposite: that we are the prisoners of history, of place, of custom, even of climate, and that the most you can hope to do is maintain what you have by playing along with history. A ball is always a good thing,” Bassani agreed—and how would Visconti ever have made his movie without it?According to David Gilmour’s excellent 1988 biography, “The Last Leopard,” the novelist was neither a Fascist nor a staunch anti-Fascist and “remained too skeptical and disillusioned to be a genuine democrat or a liberal.
