The movie on my screen was 1985’s The Goonies, one of the many relics from my childhood now being reborn to rake in bundles of nostalgia-fueled cash. The GM’s main goal is to gain points by defeating goonies and stopping them from completing their secret goal which only the GM knows. Be careful though the Fratellis are hot on your trail so don’t take too long or make too many mistakes.
Some of the puzzles we got almost instantly while others that took us quite some time to figure out. My wife and I are both big Goonies fans, as well as fans of the Coded Chronicles series of games from The Op, so when we heard there was going to be a Goonies Coded Chronicles game we jumped at the chance to check it out. This is the main chunk of the game really but is always intense and never seems to drag on for long as there are only 2 actions that each Goonie can do, and the GM actions cost GM points so they can’t exactly go crazy with their turn’s actions either. Along with this, you may also find other sources of four digit numbers, plus some of the characters have other interesting ways to interact with things other than just using skills.My kids could probably set it up with some experience, but not until they’ve played the game a few more times themselves. The Goonies: Escape With One-Eyed Willy’s Rich Stuff – A Coded Chronicles Game includes a very short Adventure Guide that you read first that introduces the Coded Chronicles system. Flooded Token: Foes are not impacted by Flooded rooms, but any Goonie in a Flooded Room must spend 2 Wish Tokens instead of 1 for Upgrades and Teamwork.
And the way The Op are merging clever modern board game techniques with classic nostalgia such as Scooby Do, The Shining and The Goonies is a sure fire way to create happiness. Foes Attack similarly to how Goonies do, but if there are multiple Foes and Goonies in the same Room, the GM needs to spread out the Attacks as much as possible. To best enjoy it gather a group of other Goonies fans so you can split up the roles and all the reading.
It’s a cooperative game for the Goonies players and the whole thing is designed for 2-5 players ages 12+ and a single adventure takes around 1-2 or so to play.
Gain a GM Token: These Token can be used to Upgrade Rolls, Draw/Play extra GM Cards, or Defend with an End is Nigh Roll with an Hour glass Card. From here on, interacting with the game mainly involves combining the character’s unique skills with the numbers on things in play. The adventure here starts once the kids are in the caverns under The Lighthouse Lounge but it does explain all of the events leading up to that point through its narrative. You can play through the entire thing in around 3-5 hours depending on the size of your group and ability to solve the puzzles. During our last podcast recording, Sean and I started talking about which licenses we would love to see in a Coded Chronicles game including the A-Team and the Breakfast Club.The terrain pieces and sort of room modifier pieces can be put together in trays within the box and it was fast enough for me to pull out any I needed when it came up, if it did. Wandering Foe Cards can be used for the GM to place one of the Wandering Foes set by the Adventure in any Explored Room without a Goonie.
