This is the girl in the car just before she exposes one of the breasts causing the driver to crash. After Metalious's death, Peyton Place resurfaced as the setting for nine novels by Don Tracy (1905–1976), writing as Roger Fuller, including Evils of Peyton Place (1969) and Temptations of Peyton Place (1970), but this series had only modest sales. [6] For its time though, it played a part in the opening up of the stodgy tone which fiction had taken on in the early 1950s, yet the writing still suffers from that influence. Peyton Place has been made into a movie twice: in 1957 with Lana Turner and in 1964 with Mia Farrow. I have never see either movie but think they would be worth watching. From 1964 to 1969 the story ran as a primetime TV drama serial in soap opera format; never saw those either. I imagine it was television which brought the term "Peyton Place" into well known American parlance, as in, "That neighborhood is a regular Peyton Place." She insisted Peyton Place was based on several places in New Hampshire – including Durham, where her husband attended the University of New Hampshire; Gilmanton, where he taught school; and Laconia, where her favorite bar was located. Peyton Place, The Book

It was a question Grace Metalious fielded a lot, and one that dogged her, even as she thrilled to experience a kind of power and influence she hadn’t expected. Her story began as a charming rags-to-riches tale about a mother who followed her dream of writing books, and wrote one so good it captivated the nation. But it went on to become an allegory for the swift, corrupting force of wealth and fame, and a sad testament to the potential for ugliness that awaits when we get what we want. For those of us of a certain age, we remember when Peyton Place was a TV series beginning in 1964. Before that was a book written by Grace Metalious written in 1956. Peyton Place eventually sold over 12 million copies but even then is most widely remembered for its film and TV adaptations. At the time the book came out it created al sorts of havoc. Grace was the wife of a school principal, a former mill worker, with no advanced education .. and the mother of three. Peyton Place was her debut novel ... about a murder in a small town.

Grace Metalious published “Peyton Place” in the 1950s in America, and, although it became a huge smash, sourcing television shows and movies, it made Grace a societal pariah, turning her small town and all of its citizens against her. Firstly, Grace did not meet the expectations of what a “lady” was supposed to be, especially in a small New Hampshire town, and “Peyton Place” itself was full of sexual deviancy, murder and incest, which tarnished Grace’s reputation further. Although Grace insisted the story was fictional, many of the characters were too similar to her small town neighbours to ignore. The murder in “Peyton Place” was also very similar to a real-life murder in her town, dubbed “The Sheep Pen Murder”, where a young woman supposedly killed her father and buried him on his property’s abandoned sheep pen, where he lay undiscovered for months.

Success for a book, the end of a marriage

"Grace Metalious". St. James Encyclopedia of Pop Culture . Retrieved August 7, 2008. Martin encouraged Metalious to spend frivolously, reminding her that she was famous after all. As Callahan writes, she spent liberally on a “new Cadillac, new clothes, dinners at ‘21,’ cases of champagne, and chartered flights to the Caribbean. Grace poured thousands of dollars into renovating the country house she’d bought on Meadow Pond Road, which had once been owned by a Chicago gangster.” Her relationship with Martin was often hostile, occasionally even violent, and lubricated by appalling quantities of alcohol. The couple were married in 1958, but divorced two years later. Once when asked if Peyton Place would stand the test of time, Grace said she didn’t think so, but as the structure of society has changed so has the way people now look at her work. Peyton Place was first adapted as a film in 1957 and entirely recast for its 1961 sequel Return to Peyton Place. It was followed by the soap operas Peyton Place (1964–1969) and Return to Peyton Place (1972–1974), and the made-for-television movies Murder in Peyton Place (1977) and Peyton Place: The Next Generation (1985).

I thought this book was excellent and I give the author cudos for writing this book when she did and to the publisher for publishing it. I was waffling at 4.5 stars and given this plus the author's writing I decided to rate it 5 on GR rather than down to 4 (since GR doesn't offer 1/2 stars). When Selena turns 14 years old, Lucas begins to abuse her, impregnating her and leaving local doctor Matthew Swain in a troublesome situation in which he decides to perform an abortion. The doctor makes Lucas leave town, and after she discovers this, Nellie commits suicide by hanging.
