This process has continued over the years, with Humument fragments providing gores for fictitious globes (now in the Victoria & Albert Museum) or decorating both the inside and outside of a skull. Most recently excerpts have accompanied an illustrated edition of Cicero’s Orations made for the Folio Society. A Humument became a touchstone of Phillips's oeuvre. The Royal Academy’s 2015 Summer Exhibition dedicated a full room to it. Quotations from A Humument populate his other paintings, works of art criticism, and some of the songs he wrote when returning to music in the 1990s. Irma, a central character and the muse of A Humument, gave her name to an opera – conceived in 1969, recorded in 1977 and 1988, with its full score published in 2015. A new production directed by Netia Jones premièred at the South London Gallery in September 2017. For instance in the early 1970s, the Music Department at the University of York performed an opera, Irma, devised by Phillips in 1969, whose lyrics and plot were based on A Humument. Others will regard it as an interventionist trend which seeks to rescue the critical and revolutionary potential of experimentalism from the aporias of postmodern pastiche and quotationism.

Fragments of text from A Humument are incorporated as pendants into the paintings Homage to Frith & Co, Come & Go and the series Ma Vlast A Humument features in Ginger Snaps: a collection of cut-ups / machine prose / word & image trips, Kontexts Publications With Eno, he invented the game of “sound tennis” – “a kind of hand tennis played in a room full of old pianos, the scoring being based on the noise they made when you hit one of them,” Eno recalled, 25 years later. “It was rather a good game.” Tom Phillips was genuinely learned in the best sense," Norman Rosenthal, a long-time Royal Academy colleague, said following Phillips's death. "He was a true polymath deeply versed in literature, music, and most of all of course in visual art and its practice through his own very personal touch. But also the most witty of individuals, aware of the ironic failings of all three of these endlessly wide worlds of culture, which yet he simultaneously always cherished and loved."

In part, Phillips’ glacial pace sprang from his frequent changes of mind about how the novel should be handled. Having started by highlighting isolated phrases in pen and ink in the 1960s, he moved on to more elaborate interventions in collage and paint in the 80s. It is, after all, my resource of greatest use – and all thanks to a man who, from photographs and contemporary accounts of his personality, would seem to be someone I would not at all have enjoyed meeting. The first bound trade edition (1980), prepared by Hansjörg Mayer in Stuttgart and distributed by Thames & Hudson, marked the end of a dormant period. Remaining active across many fields right up to his death in November 2022, Phillips was also a judge for the Booker Prize in 2017, and an occasional broadcaster and public speaker of wit and vision throughout his final years.
