Description

The book has the complete collection of poems of Cicely Mary Barker divided in sections with the drawings in great quality and detail.

I had an early copy of Mary Barker's Book of the Flower fairies which I bought for my Mum years ago. The groundbreaking debut novel of Hugo Award-winning author Becky Chambers, one of the most imaginative voices in contemporary science fiction, is a truly galactic limited edition. Epileptic as a child, she was educated at home and took correspondence courses in art for several years. Today, almost thirty years after her death, her work continues to offer delights that have stood the test of time. It was also very fun, because I took turns reading the poems with my neice, who sometimes put them to her own tunes. The beautiful artwork is accompanied by the original poetry by Barker, which not only tells you more about the fairy in question, but also shows that painting with poetry is an art form that's no longer as pure as it was. The first adventure in the Folio Society editions of ‘The Magic Faraway Tree’ series, Enid Blyton’s The Enchanted Wood features Jonathan Burton’s enchanting illustrations and a new introduction by Michael Morpurgo. We have the smaller book of flower fairies for Spring - this book is a big heavy book including all of the seasons, hedgerows, trees, meadows. It is too bad that Barker did not have access to the internet, or she would have found flowers for "U" and "X": "ursinia" and "xylobium.

Mary Shelley's darkly disturbing tale is illustrated by Angela Barrett and newly introduced by Richard Holmes. As mentioned this is the perfect book for a mother and daughter to get in some bonding time, but this certainly does not mean you need to have a daughter or be a little girl yourself to enjoy this read. The Flower Fairies have become a bit commercialized and there are many derivative books out there now and many only use use pieces of her artwork ignoring the poetry or using only a few tidbits. We get to learn which flowers bloom in summer, winder, spring and autumn, and even which berries are edible and which ones will send you off into the land of poison.Although Barker painted and published many works, both secular and devotional, it was the Flower Fairies that became internationally beloved and remain so.

With fresh new title pages and endpapers, reset text and printed on a fine quality paper, these new editions make a charming gift for all Flower Fairy enthusiasts. Presented in a treasury box set that retains all the charm of Beatrix Potter’s originals, this is the perfect gift for any child. There is a useful index, an introduction about Cicely Mary Barker – which is fairly short but long enough that most children will probably read it - and (of course) the poems and the pictures are just gorgeous. The book will serve as the perfect reminder of the time you spent with your mum in the garden, or when you played amongst the flowers and pretended you had your very own fairy friends. Through the beautiful illustrations the author brings to life the magic of flowers and how each has their very own special place in a garden. I loved the Flower Fairies so much when I was young and now being able to read this with my daughter was such a lovely experience. The flower fairies appear most realistic; perhaps because C M Barker used to sketch the children at her sister's school, bringing the faces of innocent childhood to her world of delightful fantasy.
