Mandel accepted the job because he wanted to dispel the perception that he was a "soft, arty director". Also the case in a meta sense, with both films having notable, experienced effects technicians note Conrad 'Connie' Brink and James Bond vet John Steers for the first (with makeup effects by the uncredited duo of John Caglione Jr. Special effects man Rollie Tyler (Bryan Brown), is recruited to help stage the fake death of a mafia don who wants to rat on his organised crime pals, and then finds himself pursued by hoods and cops, and having to rely on his movie magic skills to defend himself. Stuff Blowing Up: The opening prologue of the sequel starts off with a cop car failing to blow up on cue, only for the effects team to do so just after the director chews them out.

Producer Jack Wiener read their script, which was submitted as a low-budget television movie, and felt that it should be made into a theatrical release. Rollie Tyler, Hollywood's best special effects man, is commissioned to execute a murder that can only be carried out through the use of his incredible skills.

He tricks him into grabbing an unloaded Uzi covered in Krazy Glue (see the quotes at the top of the page) and forces Mason into a confrontation with the police, where he is quickly shot dead after 'refusing' to drop his gun. Where F/X floats above the crowd are in its performances; in the perfection of Miroslav Ondricek's photography, Mel Bourne's production design, John Stears' effects and Terry Rawlings' crisp, succinct editing; in the virtually unpredictable twists and turns of its plot, and in the sheer joy of watching a hero use his skill and his wits to solve a problem. F/X: Murder by Illusion is a 1986 movie starring Bryan Brown and Brian Dennehy about a special effects designer who gets dragged into a criminal conspiracy.

The shoot ends in failure when the effects technician's explosion doesn't go off when it's supposed to. The Department of Justice hires him to stage the murder of a gangster about to enter the Witness Protection Program. He and Brian Dennehy make a great pair, although they don't appear together until the end of the film. For the second, a sci-fi alien movie inspired by The Terminator featuring an alien cyborg Disguised in Drag is being filmed. Mason tries to bribe Rollie by giving him the key, proposing that they split the money, but Rollie refuses and puts his gun down.It Works Better with Bullets: When the first movie's Big Bad brandishes a pistol at Rollie, Rollie shows him the bullets he took from the gun and the superglue he put on the gun's handle, gluing the useless gun to the villain's hands. Justified as the crew behind the film's effects were also responsible for the robotic effects in Short Circuit and Class of 1999, with a skull from the latter being seen among Rollie's belongings as an Easter Egg. it works a little too well, as the killer and the person used as bait are both taken out at the same time by a third party. I recorded this on Sky Sony channel in 2017 and it is just a great movie, I have to fast forward the adverts however which is annoying so I will be purchasing this classy film on Dvd as I have also bought the sequel which is surprisingly just as good as the first movie. Rollie rigs a gun with blanks and gives DeFranco a rig with radio transmitters and fake blood packs to simulate bullet hits.

Mason and DeFranco try to leave the house when a helicopter arrives, but DeFranco is shocked by a rigged metal screen door, disrupting his pacemaker.

Brian Dennehy, Diane Venora, Cliff De Young, Mason Adams, Jerry Orbach, Martha Gehman, and Joe Grifasi). Jump Scare: Rollie has a latex movie monster set up to leap at his door while a recording of the monster's roar is played, whenever somebody comes in. Danish ( Subtitles ), Finnish ( Subtitles ), Norwegian ( Subtitles ), Swedish ( Subtitles ), WIDESCREEN (1. A week before its release, a film industry screening was very successful, as was its premiere at the United States Film Festival (later known as the Sundance Film Festival).
