As an Agatha Christie fan and a follower of all her mystery novels, l have to admit she has a wonderfully creative mind when it comes to plots and character portrayal.

Since I am a Massachusetts native, I especially enjoyed the book's Massachusetts setting and Boston humor. Jack Givens' father, Michael, was a hitman and left Jack and his mother years ago to go into witness protection after turning on his boss. Though, after the last three novels (which were also duds), I'm not expecting anything from here anymore. Each chapter is given over to a different character, providing a great insight into what’s going on in their minds, what makes them tick, but we don’t know everything, because everyone has secrets, and some of them are truly shocking!

Wholly original and utterly compelling, this is an incredibly tense book that is also full of regret, guilt and love. The Lie is a fine example of Dunmore’s ability to perceive the long vistas of history in which the dead remain restless .The grand-mother, the two sisters and the husband, are quite shallow, rather immature all of them, caricatures. My advice would be to p …more Hi River, having a plot in mind is a good start and I understand your fear about continuing the story throughout a whole book.

Sam spots Kayla outside Jay's apartment and tries to grab her, but she retreats back into the house as he is chasing her, banging on the windows, and screaming her name. Mary Pascoe, an elderly recluse, allows him to build a shelter and scratch a rudimentary living from her land. Lucy and Tom have just moved to the suburbs to get their 2 children, Ava and Jacob, away from the city life in London.

I guessed the "big twist" pretty much immediately and I still somehow was filled with so much suspense, dread, rage, empathy and so many more emotions; the characters were just so real and complex.

But one day he was approached by the US Marshals to become a lie maker - to create lives for those heading into witness protection. I always enjoy Barclay's books for their suspenseful thrills and engaging plots, and this one delivers both. So, while some may say this was nothing above average and even probably highly improbable, I enjoyed it - it was well-written full of suspense and plentiful of lies and surprises, the character's interests and purposes for acting the way that they did very much valid and understandable - and how all the twists culminated towards the end made me once again appreciate the fact that I can still find a thriller that is worth the read. His girlfriend Lana, who is a reporter, is curious and tries to uncover details of Jack’s new assignment.Jack is desperate to have the opportunity to talk to his father, asking the Marshall service to make this happen, only to discover his father has recently disappeared, and could be in trouble, having destroyed lives, he has enemies. A terrific read that had me gripped, and whilst I thought I knew exactly what was going on, I clearly didn’t! I've never read anything by Linwood Barclay before, but after reading this, I am very much curious to check out his other work's, namely the thrillers he's written for children. Famed for her searing accounts of the siege of Leningrad and its aftermath, Helen Dunmore moves to England after the First World War in The Lie.
