Finally, for the standard modules, the EXH‑6 has no microphones but accepts two external inputs via combo XLRs. Where the application suits desktop use, or mounting on a camera tripod (ie. indoor music or podcasting) it works well. Prospective owners should be aware that connecting any cables will make it unworkable as a handheld device, but it can be used that way if just capturing something through the XYH‑6 mic module. For outdoor field recording, I’d want to protect it in a shoulder bag and sadly the location of the connectors means that’s impossible using any conventional bag — I wonder if Zoom might consider making a tailored bag available. Also, while the screen brightness is fine for most indoor uses, it’s really not bright enough for outdoor work. With the gain flat out, it delivered a clean, quiet, signal.

(Although there is no physical knob for headphone volume, after you plug in your headphones, access is almost always available in the upper right corner of the touchscreen.) Get more than 10 hours of recording time from just 4 AA batteries. Or record forever with the optional AD-17 adapter. The Field app is best suited for handheld recordings. Its simplistic GUI makes it easy to navigate, which is particularly useful to capture recordings on the fly. The VRH-8 is an Ambisonic mic capsule that utilizes four condenser microphones to deliver immersive 360 audio recordings. A built-in accelerometer helps ensure the capsule is always perfectly aligned, while the on-board Ambisonic decoder automatically handles the necessary conversions, saving you time in post-production. Of course, I love that the H8 can record proper 48 kHz sampling frequency and 24-bit resolution (see 48kHzAllance.com and also my 2015 article Understanding 24-bit vs 16-bit audio production & distribution) in addition to higher sampling frequencies like 96 kHz (which —for the human voice— I can only justify if you plan to use slow motion audio in post) and lower ones that I don’t recommend at all, no matter what, not even for recording audio for virtual PBX/IVR interactive telephony production, as explained mathematically at 48KhzAlliance.com. Whether you’re capturing audio on location, recording music, or producing a podcast, the H8 color touchscreen adapts to your project’s needs with three App-driven interface options. All with the touch of your finger. The PODCAST App makes high-production quality simple. With dedicated Sound Pads, use the touch screen to trigger sound effects, music beds and more. Choose from 13 high quality sounds or load your own via an SD card.

Now several months in after first buying this unit and still very happy with it, in general. However, the touchscreen is a real pain to make fine adjustments to volume, etc. So dont expect to do much on that. Also, strange thing seems to happen when I have it plugged in via usb to the mains supply and I connect a phantom large diaphram mic as well as any other phantom 48v mic - seems that the large diaphram drains a little too much power sometimes and the H8 just shuts down unexpectedly. Lost some work that way. Apple brings its new M3 chips to the MacBook Pro and iMac, promising to satisfy music makers and other creatives who have a need for more speed I usually go with the standard recording settings for every channel unless there's something that really bothers me. I want to have a crystal clear sound coming out of the amps with no effects. As with food, having great quality ingredients is the most important thing. The only thing I usually do during editing is chopping and level mastering. Only in special occasions I add some after effect. The results are very impressive, I didn't expect such a high quality sound captured by the H8. I also use a lot the Zoom XYH-6 microphone capsule for mixing room sound (just a tiny 10% maybe) and it does pretty good too. The Zoom H8’s Music app is specially made for on the go recording. If you have a guitar idea and you’re not in front of your computer, just connect it, open the Music app, then press record. The Music app on the H8 also includes built-in effects, which makes it sound that much better!

In a future firmware update to the H8, Zoom should add a mix-minus option for the line output. It should be selectable in the menu for a particular input (i.e. A or B since they have a 1/4” line input). I consider the H8 to be a very good offering within its price range. I love its appearance, ease of operation, physical knobs for input gain, and the capability of seeing independent inputs on separate level meters in the Field app. I would definitely recommend it as is, and even more if Zoom accepts my suggestions for improvements in future updates.

Before unplugging the Zoom H8 from your computer, you’ll first need to “disconnect it” within the Audio Interface settings of the device. To do this, all you need to do is tap the cog (Settings)icon, tap Select, and then press Execute. Once complete, you can then disconnect from your computer or iOS device. Monitoring is via the internal mono speaker unless headphones are plugged in, the volume of either being controlled by a virtual slider accessed at the top of each app’s home screen. The maximum headphone volume is pretty good with low‑impedance phones, but there’s only the one output. While that might be fine for field and music recording, it’s rather restricting for podcasting, since the guests won’t be able to hear any stings or effects played in, even if they can hear each other acoustically. Yes, a headphone splitter or standalone amp could be used, of course, but its more boxes, wires and inconvenience. With theTascam DR-10X attached directly to your preferred microphone, you can record full-resolution dialog and speech while skipping the trouble of long cable runs and avoiding the confusion of configuring a wireless microphone system. Whether you use a handheld dynamic mic or a battery-powered condenser, the lightweight DR-10X can be discreetly affixed to the mic without weighing it down. A higher ohm rated headphone may also work well with the device, but would not be able to be driven as well by the output and may encounter volume issues. I bought this tool for recording our band's studio sessions, but also for taking it outdoors to our busking missions. This little thing does everything I ever wanted from a recording device. The power switch doubles up as a ‘hold’ facility to prevent accidental operation of the controls while recording. The elephant in the room is Apple's lightning connector. European regulators are putting pressure on Apple to ditch its Lightning connector in favour of a universal standard such as USB-C. If they are successful, then the MV88 may be forced into early obsolescence. Depending on the audio you’ll be capturing, use the switches on the center that are most applicable to what’s connected to that particular input.
