Using red jugs to improve hydration | Nursing Times Using red jugs to improve hydration | Nursing Times

In 2009, a staff nurse developed a poster about dehydration, which was seen by patients, relatives and staff. Numbers and letters in the four corners of the diamond can be decoded to discover the name of the person or company that owned the registration, and a parcel number which distinguishes between designs registered on the same date.

Espresso Gear's hard wearing non stick Teflon coating makes it quck and easy to rinse off these jugs, saving precious time for busy baristas. Since the above introduction was written over 18 months ago, there are lots of developments to report. It has been immensely satisfying that this scheme has been accepted in many trusts in the UK, and also has garnered interest internationally. They were often adapted from jug designs and full details of the jugs will be filed on the appropriate manufacturer's page. I am starting to think about preserving the site when I am gone, so any constructive suggestions there would be particularly welcome.

Simple measures: improving hydration in patients (DBTH)

Nursing staff at Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals (DBTH) are set to implement a number of innovative measures to help patients stay hydrated – a major challenge for health professionals. In response to these comments, a working party was set up involving all levels of the ward team to identify a way of improving hydration. Our best selling straight-sided foaming jugs are now available with teflon coating for super quick and easy cleaning.

From 25 November 2019 the Trust will adopt a simple, traffic light system using coloured jug lids to monitor the amount that individuals are drinking across the day. A number of relief-moulded jugs are found which are extensively coloured, not just with coloured backgrounds or small amounts of colouring to pick out the moulding. It is very much a grand, long-term project and the initial pages may be relatively few, but hopefully, like Topsy, it will grow.

Colored Jugs - Colored Jugs Colored Jugs - Colored Jugs

Introduced as part of the Trust’s ‘But First a Drink’ initiative earlier this month, colour-coded jugs are used as a simple visual cue to monitor a patient’s fluid intake. The introduction of traffic light system is DBTH’s approach to reducing dehydration amongst patients. The jugs selected are easier to use than standard hospital equipment because they have thicker handles and the lid remains in place when patients pour a drink. If staff are concerned about the patient’s fluid intake the red lid is used throughout and a blue lid has also been introduced for patients with strict fluid restrictions. Feedback from relatives has been positive and, in 2009, we won the Nursing Times Award for team of the year. Designed to prevent cross-contamination, these sleeves are available in four colours, and can be used to identify different types of milk. Most are coloured versions of jugs normally found in plain stoneware or parian, but a few are always coloured.
