About this deal

Year 5 Back to School Comprehension Whole Class text in the form of a blog about how it feels to be going back to school from the viewpoint of a teacher.

The biggest favour you can do for your class, however, is to acclimatise them to the types of questions that they can expect to face. You can find resources based on a variety of topics, from poetry and Shakespeare plays to instructions for how to take care of a dog. Use dictionaries to check the definition of words (try this fantastic Dictionary Skills Activity Pack to introduce this topic with an engaging game). Reading and fully understanding what we have read is so part and parcel of everyday life that we can forget it is a skill that has to be taught at a young age.the strategic use of writing made reading and discussions of reading- the other core activities of English class—more rigorous, focused, productive and engaging- ‘better’ in short. This practice should further enhance the quality of students’ responses, as written answers are available for review, reevaluation, and reconstruction (Emig, 1977). Nothing in this Agreement limits liability for fraudulent misrepresentation or our liability to you in the event of death or personal injury resulting from our negligence or that of our employees agents or sub-contractors.

Presenting pupils with a wide range of different text types and topics will help boost their confidence. An important key to success in using these activities with lower-achieving students was to provide them with ongoing practice and explicit instruction. Questions are organised into levels of increasing difficulty while progress tests throughout check children’s understanding along the way. And, it saves you having to reinvent the wheel when it comes to providing questions with which to test their comprehension skills. This page on comprehension begins with development of reading, and moves to writing and the understanding of the written word. So, spending lesson after lesson focusing on ‘how meaning is enhanced through choice of words or phrases’ might not be the most efficient use of your teaching resources. For example, short sentences to add dramatic effect or tension lower the score - but are important technical aspects to be experienced by readers.

Here you'll find two weird and wonderful, child-friendly news stories accompanied by a range of activities. Actually, all of these activities have a greater effect size than answering questions and therefore should be explored further in the primary classroom - another blog post for another time!

In my first blog post in this series I explored the difference between reading comprehension strategies and reading skills. That’s why we’ve hand-picked some comprehension resources, designed to help pupils extract and analyse the right pieces of information with ease. Read through the extract, underlining all the words and phrases that describe the Psammead’s appearance. We have included some fiction passages from well known books to encourage reading and understanding.Official papers are available on the internet but, of course, there is only a limited supply and it might be that your school uses them for more formal assessments at key points in the year. You are responsible for ensuring that your computer networks run appropriate protection against viruses or other malware.
