About this deal

The reason I’m not giving it five stars is because own part of the book I became bored - the part where she reads the play script. Later that night Stella Fogler was brutally murdered in her hotel suite and the police approached Claire to provoke Patrick into making a confession about this murder and others which they believe that he has committed. There were chapters were she was either in class or acting in a play and I could see the connections between the two. A businessman, about forty-five, wearing an expensive casual-cut suit that suggests he’s something more than the usual executive drone, the collar lapped by hair that’s just a little too long for Wall Street. The opinion of Claire, the protagonist in this novel, couldn’t be more divergent from mine when it comes to the topic of basking in the glow of the spotlight.

The red is eye catching sure, but everything else just didn’t interest me and I was hoping for something similar to the other covers that Delaney’s book have and I actually would have preferred the original title The Decoy over Believe Me.I liked that the setting of this book was constantly changing, that created more intrigue to me, as a reader.

From the exercises Claire does as part of her acting classes, creating a fascinating insight into acting tricks and techniques, and how actors go about getting themselves into character to the psychological profiling she endures, to what people do for kicks and the games lovers play, and the way in which art and literature can inform and inspire both beauty and something altogether darker and uglier.

There was probably a very good reason why the original release of this book seventeen years ago wasn’t met with huge critical acclaim and that’s simply because it’s not particularly impressive. Does anyone else feel completely refreshed and renewed when they pick up a book and finish it in 24 hours or less? Dedicated to the approach of deeply immersing herself into the roles she plays until they become part of her, Claire’s intent is not to act, but to really become. Description of the book: In this twisty psychological thriller from the New York Times bestselling author of The Girl Before, an actress plays both sides of a murder investigation.

Every so often scenes would be written out as if they were pages from a script, this was a nice technique that added to the immersive drama feel of the story as well as working to get you further into Claire’s head: she has a tendency to view all scenarios as a potential scene from the movie of her life. It is her hunt for this adoration that brought her to New York City to study at a prestigious — READ : expensive AF — acting school. Unable to legally work without a green card to pay her living expenses she takes a cash in hand job as a decoy for a firm of divorce attorneys honey trapping errant husbands. She sees this as a role that offers her the opportunity to get the much desired green card, and besides she can do this. It was so un believably far fetched and unrealistic to the point I was just laughing at the final twist(s) and outcomes. And then, as she learns throughout the book, it can be difficult to tell when you are acting and you have become the character. The plot is excellent but this might be a book to avoid if you're averse to some graphic descriptions of horror.
