Description

We’re a bit late with the XR-55A80J – a year late in fact – but Sony’s 2021 second tier OLED is still available well into 2022 and has hit a price point that would make late adopters to the OLED market peak their head above the parapet with interest. In a depression, facing towards the wall and requiring plugging up into the panel area, are the coaxial cable connector, an Ethernet port, the optical audio out, a port for an RS-232C remote, three additional HDMI ports, and one more USB port with a maximum 900 mA power output. That isn’t the case: the A80J offers most of what makes the A90J great at a far more accessible price. It might not be quite as bright and punchy as its flagship sibling, or as sonically weighty, but in many other ways it’s just as capable. That makes it a remarkably crisp, detailed and dynamic performer for the money, with a superior sound system to its price rivals. BRAVIA CORE is a custom technology and service designed to bring a cinema level viewing experience to your lounge. It means that all BRAVIA XR models will come with either 24 months (Z9J, A90J) or 12 months (A84J, A80J, X95J, X94J and X90J) of BRAVIA CORE included, giving you access to a selection of titles from Sony Pictures Entertainment’s “premium and classic” films and the largest IMAX Enhanced library available anywhere.

With this update we've revamped our Gradient testing, added a new test for Low Quality Content Smoothing, and expanded our Audio Passthrough testing. Comparing the two (even though they’re different sizes) would indicate that the Sony A80J puts more of an emphasis on HDR highlights (smaller, brighter objects) while the C1 is a smidgen brighter when dealing with bigger bright objects. However, brightness is only just one element to consider where picture performance is concerned. I’m not sure about the quality of its recommendations, though. You can like or dislike titles to give Google TV a better idea of what you’re interested in, but it served me titles I didn’t look all that interested in or films I’ve already watched. Google TV gives easy access to your favourite content, services and compatible smart devices. Using the voice remote, you can ask the Google Assistant to connect and communicate with other smart devices. You can also find the latest films and TV series on Netflix, Disney+, Prime Video, Apple TV, NOW TV and more*. With over 6000 apps available, you can cast from your smart device with Apple Airplay and Google Chromecast built-in too. Reset: Resets all the Picture Adjustments settings to the factory settings excluding Setting Memory, Picture Mode and Advanced Settings.

XR TRILUMINOS Pro: produces a wider palette of colours with an enhanced range of hue and saturation, allowing natural shades and precise detail. That isn’t to say that we’re averse to recommending a premium product when it justifies its high price, and that’s why we were delighted to bestow the full five stars upon Sony’s 2021 flagship OLED when we reviewed it. Simply put, it was the best TV of that year. But detail levels, sharpness and clarity are all very strong, the intricate patterns on Doctor Strange’s cloak are impressively defined and detailed; the production design of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is brought to life with excellent clarity and high levels of insight in the IMAX presentation of the film on Disney+. Vivid,Standard,Cinema,IMAX Enhanced,Game,Graphics,Photo,Custom,Dolby Vision Bright,Dolby Vision Dark,Netflix calibrated We retested the TV with the PS5's variable refresh rate (VRR) feature and updated the PS5 Compatibilitysection of the review, as VRR is working properly.

These measurements are in the 'Custom' Picture Mode, with Brightness set to max, Contrast at '90', Color Temperature set to 'Expert 1', Peak Luminance on 'High', and HDR Tone Mapping set to 'Gradation Preferred'. Other than the traditional speaker terminals (which the A90J has and the A80J does not), the A80J has identical connections to the A90J, both in terms of positioning and specification. That means you get aerial, satellite (Freesat in the UK), ethernet and optical ports, plus three USBs and four HDMIs. This world-first TV picture processing, according to Sony, begins with a scene detection stage to identify and enhance the main focal points and, ultimately, adds a greater sense of depth to the image. The XR processor looks at multiple zones and other elements (colour, contrast, texture, depth, detail, etc) of each frame and performs a cross-analysis to work out the most important areas. There’s Sony’s own menu that’s the same as before, accessible through the settings button on the remote or by making your way to the right-hand side of the screen in the Google TV UI. There are plenty of options for tweaking and changing, which are explained in an easy-to-follow manner. The Sony A80J benefits from the company’s imaging expertise by combining the strengths of OLED with its new Cognitive Processor XR that’s designed to emulate how the human eye actually sees the real world. Those are some fairly lofty claims, but Sony knows a thing or two about picture quality and the new processor delivers the goods.

Costco Online UK Limited, UK Home Office, Hartspring Lane, Watford, Hertfordshire, WD25 8JS. Registered in England and Wales No. 8055444 Yeah, not good really but I would still buy the Sony over any other TV and just use an Apple TV with it, till it was sorted. Sony’s OLEDs use cutting edge “in-screen” speaker tech. This is a clever Acoustic Surface Audio+ custom technology exclusive to Sony that lets the TV use the screen panel as a speaker, providing robust audio that matches what you see onscreen. Where as Full Array LED models (X90J, X94J, X95J & Z9J) use Acoustic Multi Audio which cleverly places speakers all around the screen providing you with a truly immersive experience.

Its premium look metal bezel is extremely narrow so your eyes naturally focus on the picture, not what's around it One of the biggest selling points for all the new BRAVIAs is the new Cognitive Processor XR which understands how we watch TV, cross referencing everything from where we’re focussing to what we’re listening to. They then analyse the information using next-generation Cognitive intelligence to optimise every pixel, frame and scene to create the most realistic, true to life image possible.

Of course, if you’re not a hardcore gamer (or even a gamer at all), these HDMI limitations will likely be of no concern to you, and that’s entirely correct. And if you’re a hardcore movie and TV show addict, you’ll be pleased to know that the A80J is, too. Fancy having the biggest, highest resolution TV possible? Then the MASTER Series Z9J 8K Full Array LED has you covered. Available in 75 and 85-inch models this top end telly is one of the first series to make the jump to razor sharp 8K resolution, making it a top choice for enthusiasts. We tested the 55-inch Sony A80J(XR55A80J), which is also available in 65-inch(XR65A80J) and 77-inch (XR77A80J)sizes. These results are also valid for those models, but the 77-inch model has a slightly different screen coating. The A80J is also sold as the A80CJ at Costco, but only the 65 and 77-inch models. If OLEDs are a little too expensive then the X95J/X94J 4K LED series, are your best port of call. Though they have Full Array LED, rather than OLED panels, the TVs share a common DNA with their more expensive siblings, making them a great choice for buyers on a budget! The X94J is exclusive to Currys PC World. Sony’s BRAVIA XR line is one of the best we’ve seen in ages, featuring numerous TVs covering multiple sizes, user cases and price points. Make no mistake, whether you’re a gamer, cinephile or early adopter looking to jump to 8K ahead of the masses, there’s a new BRAVIA for you. The Sony A80J is the mid-range model in the company’s 2021 OLED lineup, and while it doesn’t include the brighter XR Contrast Pro panel found on the high-end Master Series A90J, it’s powered by the same super-smart Cognitive Processor XR chip.
